Hi All,

I have a .40 Shield and am very happy with it. However, I have recently noticed an inconsistency in the magazine loading. My seven rnd mag loads great while my six rnd mag seems to take a lot more force and effort to "snap" into place with the slide closed. I just saw a review on YouTube stating that the smaller capacity mag in 9 mm is much more difficult to load with the slide closed as well. I am wondering if this is a design flaw with both calibores and the small capacity mags. Has anyones else had a similar issue with either caliber Shield?

Thx...Brian

I didn't measure mine but I'll bet the mag springs are the same in both mags, hence less pressure with the extended mag. The mag catch is steel so I'm not worried about anything wearing out.

My Shield .40 was the same way. The 6 rd seems to be loosening up some (after 500 rds). Since I carry the 6 rd, I will start using the 7 rd'er at the range.

With the 9mm 7 round mag (and I imagine it'd be similar with the 6 round .40), with a full mag, there's only about an 1/8" bit of give before the follower seems to bottom out, even pushing with my UpLula. (Maybe it is just the compressed spring, but it sure feels like it's bottoming out). When inserting with the slide closed closed (topping off to +1, etc) This doesn't leave much room for the mag to seat under the slide.

Since the followers are a relatively soft plastic, I'm hoping this will ease up after some more rounds being put through it (the legs bending/flexing?), but if it doesn't, the next thing I might try is sanding/filing about another 1/8" off the feet of the follower on one of my spare mags. It could be that the legs on the followers are a bit too long. I'm hoping that taking 1/8"-1/4" off the legs won't mess up the Follower/Spring fit.

Had a weird thing happen to me today. I loaded up the 8, inserted it, racked it, and out comes the mag. the first round made it into the chamber but yea it fell out. weird. Though while racking it I could have hit the button. Who knows.

I bought a M&P 40 several years ago, and after shooting it for several months, it started ejecting the magazine when the first shot was fired. I came to this site to find out what the problem was and found that this was a pretty common problem especially with the compact versions of the pistol. A new (free!) mag catch from S&W solved the problem permanently.

After the third shot with my Shield 40, the mag dropped. After checking I think my thumb touched the release button. The button does not need much pressure to release. I kept my thumb away from the release and no more drops. The release button could use a tad stronger spring to keep minor touches from dropping the mag.
