So I went to the local fun shop today and asked about getting night sights installed. They told me $60 to install it because the rear sights are really hard to get out and the new one they installed on to an employ's gun had to be fitted and took 3 hours to do. If they would have had some sights in stock I probably would have done it but they were out.

Any one else have this hard of a time getting the rear sight off and new sights installed?

Also any suggestions on what sights to get? I had mepro lights on on my G19 before it sold it for the shield

I put some Truglo TFO's on my shield and yes, the rear sight was hard to get out. I mushroomed the tips of 2 brass punches and one fairly soft steel punch. I ended up using a square headed driver bit to get it out (yes the set screw was removed before trying to remove the sight). The original sight doesn't look very good any more, but I love the TFO's.

I replaced the sights on mine without much problem. The rear sight can be pushed out with a drift, left to right as you look from the rear. There is a disk and a spring under it, a bit annoying to get back but not a big deal. Most sights as these are, need to be fitted, filed material off the bottom until it properly fits, YouTube has examples.
It's not a really big job to do if you're comfortable filing and fitting, if not the gun shop may be money well spent.
I installed Trijicon HD sights which are quite nice but pointy on the rear. I've had the regular Trijicons and Meprolites and would stick with the regular Trijicons in the future. Just my opinion on that.

Shield Rear Sight---My Gunsmith said some or all ??-- M&Ps Rear Sight drifts--from the opposite side as most pistols; maybe the Forum can comment on that. He installed for me, XS Sights--Big Dots (which has Tritium in the "large" front sight. Excellent sights and customer service.
Installation = $ 60.00; funds well spent! Schneider

I just had a set of TruGlo TFO sights mounted to my M&P to replace the stock sights. First, I had started to remove the sights at home, and had gotten the rear sight moving (slowly) in the dovetain with just a brass punch and a few taps with a hammer. I then realized that I still would have the front sight to remove, and then I still had to mount the new sights. Time for a sight pusher, not time to cheap out. Luckily, I remembered a local gun store that is a major police/fire/emt outfitter. I called the store (GT Distributors) in the morning and spoke to a salesman about the problem. I was sure he knew I had not purchased either the M&P or the sights from their store. His response: "Well, we're going to have to charge you labor for that...and that's going to run about $20.00-$25.00." Sold. I had the M&P back after 1 day in their shop - excellent results, I couldn't be happier. The reasons for my long reply: 1) you need the right tools and/or know-how to do this job; 2) sometimes cheap is good, but this isn't one of those times. Get professional help for this to avoid pain/problems; and 3) check out any local gun stores that specialize in outfitting the local police. They may be able to either do the job for you (hopefully at low cost), or know someone that provides gunsmithing for the local constabulary. By the way, a local gunsmith quoted me a 2-month turn around and $80.00 for labor for the same job.

Best of luck,

Dave
