Can anyone recommend a good pocket holster for the Shield 9mm? Thanks.

I was real happy with the one I got recently for my Shield 40 from Bob Mika. I started a thread on the M&P Pistols forum about it a couple weeks ago and posted some pics there, if you're interested.

Unless you have really big pockets you are just fooling yourself calling the shield a pocket pistol. It really falls into a black hole to big for pocket carry and not really big enough for a duty/ccw pistol. My choice which means absolutely nothing is a full size 1911 or full size M&P 45 for edc.

As the previous poster mentions, some are unable to pocket carry the shield. I have never had a problem. I pocket carry in a Desantis Nemisis. It works fine for me in jeans, khakis, and cargos. I guess if you are a smaller person, or wear tighter clothes, you may have a problem. Otherwise, The Nemisis works great and I highly recomend it!

It is fairly inexpensive, conceals the pistol well, and remains in the pocket when you draw.

Hope this helps.

I'm able to pocket carry in the front pocket of my jeans. I use a Quest pocket holster that i picked up one day at the local indoor range. Works fine.

I use the Desanti model E1 made for the Glock 26

I had issues with the stock rear sight catching ony pocket. When I replaced the sights with XS Big Dot the sagging was resolved and I pocket my Shield with flush magazine in Dockers 36x32 with no problem.

I just bought my shield today and compared it to my PF9...they are the same length, but the shield is a little taller compared to PF9, but it still fits into my pocket. I'm not a huge guy and the shield will be in my pocket. The Desantis Nemesis for PF9 doesn't fit my shield, so I'll be picking up a Nemesis that does fit the shield.

Try the Nemesis for the KT P11, G26, or PPS. It should work fine.
I've been using the Galco Cowhide PRO286 made for the G26.

I have a desantis nemesis for my Shield, and a desantissuperfly for my kel tec pf9. I like the exterior material of the superfly better for holding the holster in the pocket. desantis even states that the superfly is better, although it does cost more (approx $32 vs 22). probably because it comes with that flap thing that Ill likely never use.

only reason I didn't buy the superfly initially, is that the LGS didn't have one for a shield, and the same nemesis fits a G27. So worst case, Ill maybe use it for that; and I still plan on getting a superfly for the shield. after I get an iwb holster.

Desantis Nemisis works well here.
I use pocket carry as an alternative choice. Might not carry it that way all the time, but with a pocket carry holster, you can easily use it as an IWB holster.

This is a photo comparing it to my previous pocket carry, Radom P64 9x18, in an Uncle Mikes #2.

Were it so easy...

Bigger people have problems too. Years spent in the squat rack have left me buying pants to fit my legs. The pants being sold now have trended so much toward the skinny legged style that almost none of them fit me. Guys with skinnier legs have much more 'drape' in the pocket area and will have less of a problem getting away with pocket carrying a Shield size pistol.

Brands of clothing vary greatly in term of actual pocket size too. The style of pocket (angled vs. on seam) can make a big difference in what is visible. Pocket proportions/attachment may also cause the rear sight to catch trying to fish the gun out of the pocket. For not a lot of money, a person can have a seamstress sew in a bigger and more substantial pocket in pants that come with too small of a pocket for carry.

I bought a Sticky holster to try out with my Shield for circumstances where I can't wear a belt and IWB holster. While I don't plan on using my Sticky for a pocket holster, I have tried that mode of carry around the house and find it an acceptable solution with certain shorts or pants.

The problem I have using the Shield for pocket carry, is the same one I find with most small pistols: putting the square peg in the proverbial round hole. By design, pistols are more square than a revolver. My gold standard for pocket carry has a always been a Centennial J-frame. The round form of this revolver just flat works better for getting a gun out of the pocket. Absent the the corner of a pistol, a Centennial revolver is way more pocket friendly.

There are, of course, tradeoffs inherent with a five-shot gun, which is why many are looking for the Shield to replace their J-frame. I have a 9mm J-frame (the 940) that is all-stainless and weights within an ounce loaded of my Shield with a 7-round mag and one in the chamber. While 8 vs. 5 rounds of 9mm makes a strong argument for finding a way to make the Shield work for pocket carry, the practical reality (for me) is that the J-frame simply works better with most of the shorts or pants I wear.

The photos below illustrate how close the J-frame (940 here) and Shield are in size, yet so very different in form factor. The holster shown is a Sticky Holster MD-2. See: Sticky Holsters - Redefining Concealment

I pocket carried a Taurus TCP 380 for a long time. In a pocket holster it is almost invisible. I wear nothing but slacks or Docker style cotton pants. The pockets are plenty large for carrying the 40cal Shield with easy access (I have skinny legs). The weight is a non issue. The weight is supported by the belt and the waist, not the pocket. A good gun belt relieves the feeling of carrying weight. The one negative is that with or without a holster, it looks like I am carrying something bulky in my pocket. It might cause someone to suspect it is a gun if they were really checking me out. I am not sure I care, but it might matter to others. I have a kahr CM9 and after carrying that in my pocket, I have come to the conclusion that it looks and feels great. That is what I carry most days.
Mika pocket holsters work well, but I think I am going to give a horse hide(thinner and stiffer) Recluse pocket holster a shot for the Shield. I think covering up the grip on the outside will make the Shield less visible. With most pocket holsters, the grip will still print. After time, the material at the bottom of the holster will begin to fold compounding the printing.

Alan at Aholster made me a great kydex pocket holster for my shield. Thin light and works great for cargo shorts or pants. Use my 340 for jeans or dress pants.

That would solve any folding problem. I will take a look at the web site.

I use an Aholster for my G26 and that "Vlad the Impaler" hook he puts on the top of his pocket holsters is wicked! I would hate to get poked in the manly area with that thing! For that reason I tend to not use it much.
