I'm curious to know if any of you have experienced this problem.

I bought another 9mm Shield, cleaned & lubed it, and headed off to the range. After about 20 rounds, I noticed that, when the slide was locked back, the internal rod was sticking through the guide rod. I took is apart and this is what I found.

Call (don't email) S&W CS tomorrow, describe how the RSA fell apart, and ask them to send a new one.

Seen a few of those on a Shield FB page. S&W will replace it, but this seems to be the better fix.

Yes, I had the same thing happen with mine last year. S&W didn't even want to know the ser. no. when I called. They just said they'd send another. It was on backorder and I received the replacement 5 weeks later. The gun had ~400 rounds through it when the problem occurred, and I now have another 300 through it w/o further problems. This is the only problem I've experienced with the Shield. It has been a joy to shoot, .. and surprisingly accurate for such a small gun.

Looked at mine real quick, and it appears that yours is missing that little black retainer piece on the end. Not sure how it attaches, and wasn't about to mess with mine to see how. Clearly defective part though.

As advised by hoc9sw, call S&W for a free replacement. The SS Guide Rod RSA appears to be a decent product, but it costs $40. A properly made S&W RSA will work fine and will last for thousands of rounds. I would resort to the SS Guide Rod RSA only if S&W is seriously backordered. Last summer, it took me a couple of months to get one from S&W. I think they're sending them out faster now. If you're interested in my experience, you can read it here:

I just picked up my new sheild last night. Definitely not wanting to hear this.

Don't worry about it. Make sure you install the RSA correctly upon reassembly and shoot the **** out of it. I'd call S&W and get an RSA ordered as a back up just in case. That's what I did. I have had no issues with my original.

Lock the slide open and gently twist and tug the retainer disc on the front of the RSA. It should not move. If it's on good and tight, your RSA should be good to go for thousands of rounds. If it's the slightest bit loose, you have a bad one and you should call S&W right away.
