Shield Question

Not sure if this has been asked, so here it goes.

The M&P series has the ability to switch magazine release (left or right), does the shield have the same ability. I looked at the online owners manuals at S&W website it doesn't specify it will but looks like it could.

The reason I ask, my daughter is left handed and I am looking to get her a pistol of her own. It looks like a Walther or M&P compact is in the running but a Shield could fit in if it is able to convert to left hand release.

No, the Shield is not ambidextrous.

It doesn't take a lot of practice to learn releasing the mag with the left index (or middle) finger. When I shoot left handed, I curl my left middle finger in and release it.

Being a lefty, she may want to go with the NTS (no thumb safety) model.

I'm a lefty and I actually prefer it this way. It's a whole lot easier to me than shifting and straining my thumb forward like when I shoot righty.

I would also suggest no thumb safety especially if this will be a defensive weapon because she will be even slower on the draw than a righty. I think it's called the 25 foot rule that a guy with a knife can close the distance and stab most people before they can draw and fire a gun with no safety. And that is when people are expecting it. Imagine the surprise, nervousness, etc let alone having to remember to flip off a safety.

If your daughter does decide to go with a safety, maybe she could get used to gripping with her left hand and slipping her right hand over the top of her left hand to quickly disengage the safety with her right thumb. I do this and it's almost second nature. A little slower on the draw is all.
