Shield recall

I was in a LGS today when the owner received the recall notice from her distributor. She said it was a labeled a "recall notice." The notice said to stop selling Shields immediately.

I don't really get how the trigger participates in the drop safety function, can someone explain this?

interesting post, but I still don't buy it. The mass of the trigger bar and trigger and any other part involved that would in theory keep moving towards the rear once the pistol frame and slide stopped upon impact with the ground is so small that it would require a force many many times that of gravity to overcome the resistance that we know of as trigger pull weight.
First, the likelihood of an M&P firing by being dropped is small. However, it doesn't defy the laws of physics.

Since you mentioned physics first, you already know that F=ma. We know the mass of a Shield; 538.7g. So, it doesn't take a genius to see that it will hit with many times that because it will be moving. The question is, how fast? That will obviously vary with the drop height and angle.

None of that matters. What shawn posted isn't what will happen, but what the engineers believe can happen. I'm sure that S&W design engineers know plenty about physics and the forces involved. Otherwise they wouldn't have made the trigger the way they did.

the weight of the pistol is irrelevant, both because the acceleration due to gravity doesn't change based on weight and because in the theoretical scenario the pistol has stopped moving and the trigger has kept going. The mass of the trigger components is what matters because this figures into calculating the force that it can generate to cause it to keep moving against the now stationary pistol. I never said it defied the laws of physics. I used the laws of physics and known values to show what it would take for it to actually happen. Those aren't conditions we're ever going to see. It has been a fun thought exercise tonight, though.

Bought two in April of 2012, one is GTG yet the other is not. Strange because they are consecutively numbered. Called S&W, gave them all information asked for and was told to call back next Monday, guess we will see what is up then.

Wow mine was made 3/16/13 and is good to go.

SHIELD RECALL

Using plastic, or polymer if you prefer, for grips/frames is one thing. in a trigger mechanism? Dear S&W was the $ savings worth it? how much is the recall costing in $ and reputation?

Mine will be going back to the shop. HPM3XXX Produced 6/20/30. The pin does not show up at all. Full size M&P 9 works perfectly.
Called S & W, they told me to take to my closest authorized dealer.

You're the first person besides me that I've been able to find online who has the trigger issue. My pin does not show up either. I even tried to pop it out with a pocketknife this morning but it wouldn't budge. I thought it was weird when I bought it and the trigger was so different from my full size.

I figured maybe they just made the trigger look jointed when it really wasnt, kinda like they made the gun look like you could change the mag release and backstraps but you really can't.

I just bought this thing last Saturday, havent even fired a round thru it yet. I was told the same thing, take it to the nearest S&W armorer, they'd either fix it at the store or send it back for service. SN HPTXXXX Test fired 7/22/2013. :(

Thanks for the link. Mine's good. The inspection is rather easy to do, and includes a video. I like this part:

"If you are uncomfortable conducting the inspection outlined above, or are unsure whether the condition described in this notice applies to your firearm, please take your firearm to your local M&P Certified Armorer or send your firearm to Smith & Wesson for inspection."

I would think that if someone is uncomfortable with the inspection, they should not be carrying a Shield.

Holy cow, there has been a recall on the Shields! If you haven't seen this yet, you'll probably want to. It makes me sad that S&W can't figure out how to make a working pocket pistol. I think they should just stick to revolvers lol.

M&P Shield Safety Alert - Smith & Wesson

Its not a Recall. Its a Safety Alert. Can u not read?

Anyone want to bet this guy owns an Springfield, lol

Does anyone know if this is a black and white issue at purchase, or can it show up at a later date? I'm picking mine up on two weeks (did I mention Maryland sucks?). LGS checked for me and said it doesn't have the issue.

Anybody really know what the issue is? Did they forget a spring?
Does the spring break?
Is there interference and the hinged part binds?

What is the real issue?

I have one Shield on me and it works like it should. The others are out and about today, I'll check them tonight.

Its something that will affect very few Shields. Probably even less Shields than were affected by the mag drop issue. Evidently it wouldnt show up at a later date. If that were the case there would be a complete recall. The above is just a safety alert advising all Shield owners to check that theirs is working properly. If its working, ur fine. If its not working, send it back and have it fixed. When u go to pick urs up, make sure u do a check on it as S&W describes in the above link. If it checks out, u should be good to go without issue.

Its pretty plain and simple.
