Shield Rusting

Thinking about buying a 9mm Shield. Does this pistol have any rusting issues? Is the slide stainless?

No there aren't ne issues w rust it is stainless

Generally, no there are no rust issues with the Shield. With that said, it is metal under the protective layer so like any gun out there, it will rust if your treat it very poorly. Storing any gun in a wet leather holster is just asking for trouble and it one of the worse things you could do to it.

The title you chose for this thread is misleading. You don't have a Shield with rust. In fact you admit you don't own a Shield.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if it wasn't for search engines like Google. If a person typed "Shield rust" there would be a match and unless that person searched further they may think there is a problem with the Shield rusting.

We all need to be careful choosing our words when posting on the internet.

I own a Shield and not only is the slide stainless but the finish on my Shield is more durable than my ex-Nano after 1, 000 rounds and soon to be 1 year anniversary pocket concealing 10 hours per work day. The only sign of wear is a hair line wear mark on the barrel hood where two angels converge.

This is true. But you have to do a pretty poor job of taking care of it for it to rust.

this shield has an awesome coating on it. i constantly get sweat on my weapons, and alot of them had surface pitting because of it. but not the shield. it's great.

My skin has a high acidic ph balance. I have has rust issues with the mag release button. It has rusted so badly that the spring will not return it to the lock position. I have to do it manually.... I am used to Glock and Springfield which have polymer components, s&w said that those would not be strong enough but I call bull. It was a major design flaw. But other than that it is an amazing pistol.

Huh? What are you talking about? Your acidic skin rusted an internal spring and that's a design flaw? Should they have used polymer springs?

Ha, after I praised the Shields coating, my mag release button started rusting too. Not the spring, but the actual button itself.

Sorry, but I don't understand what a "rust issue" is. Never seen one, on my guns. I've been shooting for almost 60 years and never had a gun that rusted at all, never mind had "issues."

Simple cleaning and lubing, done regularly, has served me well, with all manner of guns, blue and stainless, on 3 continents. A wipe with a silicone cloth every now and then is also a good idea. Common sense liberally applied doesn't hurt.

Well, now that I know about the mag release button, I'll spray a little CLP inside there during regular after range cleanings.

The melonite coating is great. I've owned a couple of guns that ended up having the slides start to pit, the 709 Slim and my XD subcompact .40. But not this one. Is there something you can spray on other parts to help ward off corrosion that would require little maintenance?

Any type of oil like Break Free CLP or Frog Lube will help prevent rust. WD-40 is also good for this, but it attracts dirt. Frog Lube doesn't attract dirt.

I am having 2 rust issues with my shield, which I've had for about 3 weeks now. The forward roll pin is showing significant rust, and there are several (very small) spots on the front of the slide.
Carried in a suede desantis IWB, stored in a humidity controlled safe.

Were it not nearly new the slide rust I would consider normal, and the roll pin may be my fault for not lubing it, but I don't genrally apply lube to the non-moving components.

People concerned with rust need to invest in a bottle of frog lube.
