Shield Rusting

Jim

The title you chose for this thread is misleading. You don't have a Shield with rust. In fact you admit you don't own a Shield.

It wouldn't be such a big deal if it wasn't for search engines like Google. If a person typed "Shield rust" there would be a match and unless that person searched further they may think there is a problem with the Shield rusting.

We all need to be careful choosing our words when posting on the internet.

I own a Shield and not only is the slide stainless but the finish on my Shield is more durable than my ex-Nano after 1, 000 rounds and soon to be 1 year anniversary pocket concealing 10 hours per work day. The only sign of wear is a hair line wear mark on the barrel hood where two angels converge.

what are you dude, the internet title police....seriously...who cares what the title says...it is HIS POST. every time someone makes a post where you don't like the way they word it, you have to come and 'correct' them, seriously bro, relax...this IS the internet after all...take a pill or something and relax. im sure I am not the only one that gets tired of the 'title teacher' critiquing every time someone's post is not up to your perfect standards.

ARe you kidding... Russ was right on... it's misleading/..... has nothing to do with perfection..... because it's HIS POST does not make it ok.

Plastic mag release + all metal magazine= mag release FAIL.

Nope. The Shield mag release is metal where it contacts the magazine.

Known areas of rust for the Shield are under the rear site near the striker block safety hole. In fact, the rust probably originates from the sides of that hole because it is drilled out after the slide has already been melonited. In time (probably years) it will become more common to hear about it from people who:: 1. carry the gun in a high humidty environment and 2. do not apply a tiny drop of oil under the rear sight.

I get tired of seeing 'russ' crying every time a post title is not worded to 'his standards'....and I still believe he should be able to word it how he wants...and if it is a little 'misleading'....how did that really hurt you or russ??? get over yourselves.

I am having 2 rust issues with my shield, which I've had for about 3 weeks now. The forward roll pin is showing significant rust, and there are several (very small) spots on the front of the slide.
Carried in a suede desantis IWB, stored in a humidity controlled safe.

Were it not nearly new the slide rust I would consider normal, and the roll pin may be my fault for not lubing it, but I don't genrally apply lube to the non-moving components.

For the record, I found this thread exactly as RussC indicated people would.. sorry for the old thread bump.

Soft leathers like suede are usually tanned with chromium sulfate and can react with metal and cause corrosion. I only use vegetable tanned leather for holsters and knife sheaths. I do custom leatherwork and I don't like to store chrome tanned and veg. tanned even in the same room.

My skin has a high acidic ph balance. I have has rust issues with the mag release button. It has rusted so badly that the spring will not return it to the lock position. I have to do it manually.... I am used to Glock and Springfield which have polymer components, s&w said that those would not be strong enough but I call bull. It was a major design flaw. But other than that it is an amazing pistol.

Buy a N82 professional holster and the shield will not be against your skin. Might help!

I have an in house cleaner that I use to clean my weapons. When i first got my Shield, they day it came out. I coated my whole weapon with the cleaner. This particular stuff leads a small teflon coating behind as it dries. It wont stay on there forever. But often I will recoat the entire weapon again just for sake.

In my case, my shield has never shown a sign of rust.

Ha, after I praised the Shields coating, my mag release button started rusting too. Not the spring, but the actual button itself.

My Shield magazine release rusted too. The real problem is the part only rusted on the surfaces which are normally hidden inside the frame.

The pic below show my mag release while it is held in the open or release position.

Angels converge on your Shield? Must be a heavenly experience...

Indeed, we do need to choose our words carefully... ;)

Rusty mag release button

I pulled my 9mm Shield out tonight, went to drop the magazine, and the button was rusted solid. I had to really push it hard to get it to release, and then it wouldn't return to its original position.

I cleaned it up, and it's back to working OK now.

Still, I'm concerned that this will happen again.

One thing I'll look to change is IWB holster. My current one keeps most of the gun from contacting my skin, but allows the handle, and the mag release button, to contact my skin.

I wear this IWB all the time, including times when I break a pretty good sweat. I'm attributing the rust to skin contact + sweat.

The rest of the gun was in great shape - no other signs of any kind of corrosion or rust. Only the release button.

I like the gun.

I'd like S&W to change the button.

This isn't rocket science. Did you read the thread... SERVICE YOUR GUN.... it includes just a dab of lube on your mag release button.. you're concerned... service it!! It's early here, I don't mean to rant, but I'll say it again, SERVICE YOUR GUN, AND DON'T FORGET THE MAG RELEASE BUTTON.... My 1st Shield did it, I noticed it, cleaned and lubed it... has not happened since and I carry my Shield most every day.

Easy on the coffee, Jack! This ain't my first CCW, but it's the first one that rusted. That worries me. When I field strip the gun, I don't get to open the entire mechanism. What other rust issues are occurring that I can't see?

I used to treat this gun no differently than the other guns I shoot. I now consider this gun as needing more TLC than the other ones. I'm OK with that, because I like the gun. But when I choose to replace it in the future, this issue will likely impact my decision.

I did heed the info in the post above about the N82 holster - I've ordered one for this gun. I'm thinking it'll go a long ways towards avoiding this rust issue. The N82 seems similar in concept to the Alien that I currently use - the difference is that the Alien allows the handle, and the mag release button, to contact my skin, and the N82 provides complete coverage so there is no skin contact with the gun.

coffee #3.... under the belt... cleaned 2 more M&P's... ready for work... one more time.... you know the service points, not a big deal, not time consuming, just oil it once every 6 months, or whatever and move on to the next issue..

WOW, what a way to introduce yourself with an epic first post such as this one...

My Mag release button also rusted. completely MY FAULT. Life got in the way for a couple of weeks. It happens, I neglected my Shield, but wore it every day. Mag Release button rusted.
Pulled it apart, did a little Dremel work, never an issue since.
