I don't care for safeties on striker fire pistols, but I haven't modified mine. I simply leave my safety off while carrying. Many here feel the same way as I do, while others learn to incorporate sweeping the safety.

As you play with the safety, you'll see just how deliberate your movement needs to be to activate & deactivate it. If you don't want to incorporate sweeping the safety during draw into your routine, leave it off.

Of course... If you do choose to incorporate the swep into your routine, it really won't affect your 40c if you unconsciously sweep it. :)

I feel it's good for all one's defensive pistols to "work the same way." But the Shield manual safety is so small and stiff you can just leave it in the "fire" position and pretend it isn't even there,

Personally, I like the safety. I'm a 1911 shooter and flicking off a safety upon draw/before shoot is second nature to me.

Like other's have said, you can always leave it off. For a carry pistol, I'd suggest against any modifications of factory installed safety devices. Should you ever have to use the pistol to defend your life, the deceased's grieving tramp and her leach attorney could use that to try and make your life even more expensive.

I leave the safety on my Shied off. Not once, ever, in a year plus of daily carrying has the safety engaged.
IMO, I would leave it alone.

The safety on a Shield is so often discussed it's surprising to me that S&W doesn't make a model without it.

My take is that the Shield safety is small enough and tough enough to activate/de-activate that it's not really meant to be carried engaged but rather it's there to use more deliberately, say when holstering.

I'm not saying you can't train to disengage it when presenting but the Sheild safety isn't nearly as easy to disengage as a 1911 safety or even a M&P 9c safety.

For the record, I leave my safety off except when holstering and I'm getting comfortable to the point of not doing that anymore pretty soon as I've never had anything remotely point to the trigger being pulled during holstering.

Wow, how many times can a guy say 'disengage' in a single post?

Too many interruptions during the post, sorry. ;)

I leave my safety off while its on me and on any other time. I leave mine loaded at all times and it either on me or in a safe that only I have the code to. I have found myself putting the gun on my person and forgetting to shut it off a couple times. it may just end up staying off unless im holstering.

I prefer having the safety and thumb flicking it off or on is just second nature to me. It is always on until the time I intend on firing it.

With almost countless models of firearms available selecting one with a safety or not seems more sensible to me then defeating one on a handgun when you could have just bought a diff. firearm meeting your
requirements.

I agree with u completely. When I first handled the pistol I thought it would be no problem learning. With the safety being so small and me havig long fingers I guess, Im having trouble sweeping it off. The safety basically falls into the webbing below my knuckle and slides right over it. Its gonna take more practice that's all. I hope this possibly helps someone in the future that's all.

OP/ALL: I am not a Lawyer! I dislike the safety on the shield so I do not own or carry one. You fight as you train, I have carried Sigma's for 20 yrs, DA revolvers for 36 yrs and I must make a conscious effort to remove the safety when firing a 1911 ( yes I have looked stupid trying to pull the trigger that would not budge ). You are a relatively new gun owner, we welcome you and want you to be safe for your sake and ours. To all: however you decide to carry your firearm ( with safety on or off ) I do not think you should put it in a public forum, since doing so ( could) be construed as reckless, unsafe, dangerous by someone who knows nothing about firearms let alone a specific model. Mas has stated that face book statements have been introduced into evidence, true or not? I do not know. But I would never say something in public that I would not say to my Mother or to the prosecuting Attorney in open court. No offense to anyone, My thoughts only, not gospel or a mandate. Be Safe,
