Did they stop making the Shield? I have been on a 120 person waiting list for 2 months now. Anyone know what is going on with production? Should I be looking into a different gun at this time??:(

I have Glocks because that's what we use at the department, But the Shield is a nice size for carry..

It seems like the distributors may be playing games with their allocations. I bought a 9mm Shield earlier this year but gave it to my nephew when he graduated from the state police academy. In July, I put a deposit on another one at my LGS. Since then they haven't received a single Shield and said that they haven't received any since April. However, a larger shop north of me had plenty of them in stock. So I got my deposit back and bought from the shop that had them in stock.

Earlier today, I was shooting at the range operated by my LGS and they still haven't had any Shields come in in over 6 months. That sounds kind of fishy to me.

I have checked 15 different gun stores in the St. Louis area and so far, not a single Shield. A few of the places are taking orders, but have no idea when the Shield will be delivered.

Shield shortage

I have checked gun stores up to 100 miles away in my state.(WI)

I wish I could find that store in Illinois I guess I would drive down and have it transferred. I even tried Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee. I called the 1-800 number for Cabelas and was told they don't have any nation wide.

It's GAT Guns in East Dundee. Their number is (847) 428-4867. They had them on Saturday when they had a large S&W event. If they still have them, they will hold one for you if you can get there the same day to pay for it. That's what I did. I believe that they are also an authorized LE dealer.

Wow, sorry to hear that...I guess I really got lucky! I ordered a 9 Shield from "Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore" in Ohio a few days back, and it arrived at my LGS yesterday via Fedex. I just looked at their website and darned if they don't also show it out of stock now, too. I must have squeezed in under the wire and grabbed one of their last ones. I got S/N HAD1*** with a test fire date of 9/17. Haven't even fired it yet, but today I ordered the Apex Shield kit and a Crimson Trace laser (old eyes = lasers and red dots instead of iron sights these days). It's really a sweet looking and feeling pistol, I feel it would be worth the wait--easy for me to say, of course. I hope mine shoots like it looks, especially when my non-gunsmith amateur fingers get through messing with its internals putting that Apex kit in. I wish Apex had some "step 1, step 2, step 3" written illustrated instructions on their website in addition to the YouTube video clip. I tend to do better following written instructions than I do with the "pause/go/pause/go..." thing trying to follow along with a video clip while doing a job like this. But we'll see what happens.

A few months ago it was reported S&W was producing between 400 to 600 Shields per day. No exact figure as S&W will not release those figures.

They are now running three shifts and the production is up to 600 to 800 per day. That sounds like a lot but not really when you see the following statistics from a Guns in America report from ABC news:

There are more than 129,817 federally licensed firearms dealers in the United States, according to the latest Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives numbers (as of Aug. 1) . Of those, 51,438 are retail gun stores, 7,356 are pawn shops and 61,562 are collectors, with the balance of the licenses belonging mostly to manufacturers and importers of firearms and destructive devices.

I think the large gun stores are rewarded with the most shipments. I spoke to the largest gun dealer in the Portland Oregon area about 6 to 8 weeks ago, and he said the wait time on a pre pay was one to two weeks. He didn't have much problem getting them in.

They are available.. You just need to follow up on leads from forum members.. Ron

Give me leads, I will take them. I have called every lead I could fine and so far, I've only been able to find the Shield in 40 cal in stock, no 9mm.

The only leads I haven't followed up on is those wanting $600+ for the Shield. I want a Shield, but not that bad.

I have also been on a couple of lgs list for a 9mm shield . They all said the same thing they have not seen one in months, and don't know when they will be recieving any .Found a 9mm nib from a private seller. Picked it up yesterday for 450.00..Will take it to the range tomorrow.Did not have this much of a problem finding a xds.

There will be PLENTY of them available after the must-have-new-gun silliness subsides.

Probably will be able to pick them up for a very decent price lightly-used after buyer's remorse/indifference sets in on the those folks who just ran out and bought one for the sake of buying one.

Meantime, I think there are still one or two 9mm semiautomatic handguns available if that is what you need.

Try Mahoneys in Johnson City Tennessee.. They were $399 and they seem to get 9mm's one week and 40's the next.. Ron

I checked, none in stock. The nice gentleman said call back next week and see if they get any.

Try Sevier Indoor Range.. That's where I shoot and bought mine there.. They had one more I believe.. Ron

Also J Floyd's on hwy 66 had one in 9mm.. I've bought from them several times..

Even my LGS source has dried up on the shield. They seemed to have an endless supply if not the 9mm they would at least have some 40mm shields. Not any more.

Glad I got mine when I did which was 2 months ago at $430 ( $20 off MSRP for a S&W promotion ) and while not the best prices I have seen since on this forum I am more than happy with my 9mm. They are still out there but you really need to hunt to find them. I doubt even S&W knew how well recieved the shield was going to be from the very beginning.

i called larrys pistol and pawn in huntsville al. last week for the shield and was told that they didnt have any then but they would have 50 when they opened at 10 am friday morning for their s&w promotion sale that week end.

i was there at 8;45 am friday and there were people already standing at the door. at 10 am there was about 80 in line, half standing in the rain. they came to buy. guns on sale and tons of ammo stacked down the isle hip high on the floor.

i was 10 person in when they opened and went directly to one of the salesmen at the new gun counter and asked for a 9mm shield. while i was filling out paper work the guy next to me asked for a 9mm and a 40 cal shield the salseman asked if anyone else behind us was there for a shield and 4 other people asked for one
salesmen were prossing 2 customers at a time with fbi call. 10 min. after i walked up to counter, i was struggling to get through the crowd to the front door with my shield. i doubt that they had any left for saturday
