Shipping M&P Shield firearm to myself.

For you guys who have traveled with the airline and a handgun. Do you place your ammo IN the locked box with the gun? Or just in the suitcase? The rules seem kind of unclear about that. I plan on leaving the gun empty, the mag empty, and putting the factory box of ammo in the locked box with those other 2 items?

Check with the airline you are traveling on. Here are the rules for Southwest. My gun vault is not big enough for the ammo so I just put in the in the same checked luggage and I've had no problem with that. Your plan to put them all in the same locked box meets Southwest's rules, so you should be good to go!

Yeah taking Southwest so it looks like I can lock it in my gunvault if it fits or in the suitcase if it doesn't. I just tried and it appears the ammo fits with the gun in the original box. Well I'll give this a try in 2 days we'll see how it goes! :)

Just a quick followup now that I am back from my trip. This was WAY less painful than I could even imagine. Went to ticket counter, told agent I needed to check a firearm. He asked me where it was, I pointed to the gun vault.. he gave me a small form to fill out, slapped a small piece of paper on top of the gun vault saying it had been declared (They did not check the weapon AT ALL). They told me to follow a representative over to the TSA checkpoint.. they ran it through their screening, gave us the thumbs up and we were on our way.

Kudos to Southwest for making the experience painless and not making me feel like I was some sort of criminal for exercising my rights.

EXCELLENT!
Thanks for the follow-up.
Gonna 'subscribe' to this thread, so I can easily refer others to it later on.
(you know it's gonna be asked again) :)

Let's see now, it was less painless... so that means there was more pain involved than you thought... but you are happy about it. OK! Glad it worked out for you!! :D

Seriously though, thanks for the follow up. Your experience with Southwest sounds very similar to mine, which was not painful at all.

How was the motorcycle trip?
