Got mine Saturday and I love it. I paid $435.00 out the door.
I am impressed with it and find the recoil with 1325fps 00 Fiocchi buck quite manageable. I bought 100 round box of Federal 3dram game loads and ran 50 rounds of those through it. They actually felt stouter than the buckshot loads.


We set up a metal realtor sign at about 15 yards and by the time we were done we were placing most of the shot in the center.


I have done a LOT of shotgun shooting and one thing I figured out long ago is there is a tendency to shoot high hip shooting with a gun like this. My SIL was knocking **** put of the trees about 20 feet over the target.


At the short range we were shooting the wad is a good indication as to where the shot column is going. Much past that range, or if there is a heavy breeze it is not as good and indicator. I was running 6 through it as fast as I could stroke it and was bouncing the wad off the sign pretty consistently.


We took the wife's Toyota to the LGS so I got to play with it on the way home. I was pretty impressed with being able to maneuver it in that small car. I drive a bigger car or a truck and wouldn't have any problem in those vehicles.

I too am puzzled by the lack of a rear sling attachment point. I am considering this, but am hesitant to pay the $30+ that they are asking.

The guys who have shot them with sling attachment points between the grip and the receiver all say that eventually you're going to hit your hand against it.

I hear you can just thread a sling swivel into the end of the birds head grip. Not as strong but a lot safer for your hands. I'm going to try that when I get my Shockwave.

Will it fit the Mossberg or only the Remington 870? You probably understand the purpose of the strap is to prevent your support hand from accidentally getting in front of the muzzle. I assume the product you linked to serves the same purpose? I understand there are versions of the 870 available in a configuration similar to the Shockwave but more expensive.

AFAIK, it will only fit the Remington 870 and that is what I have. Like you said, I understand the purpose of the forend strap and have one sitting here on my desk that I haven't installed. I thought that this handguard might be used in lieu of the strap and serve the same purpose. I thought maybe with the handguard plate there would be less to get in the way when bringing my Gatekeeper II into action, while under extreme stress.

I think you have the right idea. I sent photos of my Gatekeeper II to a buddy and asked him a few questions. BTW, my buddy served for many years at the Firearms Training Branch of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Here is one quote: "The USMS made a bunch of "WITSEC" shotguns just like yours and at 15 yards with a class of 24 in service students firing 5 rounds each, not one target was hit!! We could see that all were firing over the top of the targets."

If you're addressing me, I found it in a small gun shop in central NC.
I called around to many stores; one store had gotten one in the day before which was promised to a customer, but apparently he changed his mind so I bought it.
Some stores will put you on a "list" for when they get some delivered.

I picked mine up today and like it.
Installed the OPsol Mini-Clip and it doesn't feed the mini-shells reliably so I'll just go 5 in the mag tube and 1 chambered.
Should be enough to do the job.

Got to the range today.
Took slugs, buckshot, dove loads, and heavy #6 shells.
The gun is very manageable, but can be a real handful when shooting full power OO buck and slugs. I suggest wearing a glove on the offhand as the recoil causes the fore end to grate on that hand severely under heavy recoil with slugs and buckshot.
No handling problems shooting “from the hip” and with slugs/buckshot it was easy to hold the gun at eye level and use the front bead sight.
I also took some Aguila Mini-Shells in their buckshot load, which has seven #4 buck pellets and four O buck pellets.
I didn’t pattern the shot loads, but below are the Aguila Mini shotshells at 5 and 10 yards.
From some videos I’d seen I expected a wider pellet spread, but was pleased with the results.
From 5 yards I got a spread approximately 3.5” x 3.5”, and from 10 yards it was 6” x 6”; certainly adequate to put all pellets in a torso size target up to 10 yards.

I have simulated a variety of "eye level" sight picture firings, and I have yet to find one that I don't think will result in a butt stock to the eye. Let me know . . .

This is what worked for me.... tell me I'm cool, or tell me I'm an idiot... it won't make any difference.

Paid $399.

So far about 250 rounds of 4 buck, 00 buck, a few slugs and an initial handful of 6 shot. No issues. It has loosened up quite a bit. It was typically a little stiff at first.

The front bead works great for me beyond contact distance.

Hip shot.... 2 reasons... my target is close enough to grab it, or for longer targets, I want to look cool to the guys on the range. I don't play for that team. I do practice hip shots some for the first reason, but even across a room a slight extension makes good hits easier for me.

We ran it some from inside a car at ambush distance. Really shines on this although it WILL get your attention no matter which end of it you are on.

I put a QD stud on the grip and a simple sling. I did color coordinate the sling with my uniform. This is all about fashion right?

Call me cheap but I like velcro on side saddles. Less expensive, easy to change out between buck/slugs/combo and use across multiple guns. I have it on my patrol 12, my home 12, and now this one. I never shoot more that one shotgun at a time, so having a carrier of each is all I really need. Never had an issue with them. One more sheet of velcro on this one and it was good to go.

The only real complaint I have is that the grip is a little slick. I am thinking baseball bat grip tape at the moment. I have used that before on other things and it worked well.

I did post another thread here of a case that fits it well and does not scream COOL TACTICAL DUDE HERE!

I am hoping to get approval to use as an entry gun. Even if that doesn't fly it will be my truck gun.

Did you fire 2-3/4" shells or mini-shells?

98% 2.75. I did run a couple of tubes of 3" and a couple of mixed 2.75 and 3 to check function.

No mini's. Sorry.

I'm sticking with 2-3/4" 00 buck. The OPsol adapter I bought did not preform 100% with mini shells.
Don't want to have a mini shell jam if I need to use the shockwave in the future.
The firearm was designed for 2-3/4 and I plan to keep it that way.

Ok so I have about 300 rounds through mine now, mostly heavy target with a few slugs and different buckshot rounds mixed in.

A few observations so far.

As I stated previously when hip shooting the tendency is to shoot high. I have that pretty much mastered.

The grip needs modified somehow. When shooting long strings and heavy loads the grip slides through my hand and the safety rubs a whole in the web between thumb and forefinger. I am thinking a "bump" on top behind the safety would work, or finger grooves, or both. I am not afraid to experiment so I think I will get some glass bedding jell and do the aforementioned modifications.

I have mostly shot it from the hip, but I was playing with sighting down the barrel last night and found I was comfortable doing it with a "gangsta cant". Other words I turned it on its side slightly and got good effects without worrying about taking one in the teeth. Target was a 16oz beer can at about 15 yards and I was 5 for 5.

The little mother scooter is LOUD with slugs.

The heavy targets kick more than the 00 buck I have put through it.

I have had no issues with the for end other than I have forgotten to put my hand through the strap a couple of times. I still have all my fingers though.

Yes, I shot about 20-25 of each at eye level and the recoil is pretty stiff with those loads. I did not shoot them on a target for "pattern."
Didn't even come close to bashing me in the nose.

I removed the grip from my Gatekeeper II and pulled on a piece of bicycle inner tube. I haven't taken the gun out for a dance yet (maybe tomorrow) but it seems to make the grip a little less slippery.
