Shooting is expensive these days... Other hobbies

Does drinking count as a hobby? I do enjoy finding new breweries and brew pubs in my area. :D

I always enjoyed exploring different places but when you're 13 and stumble onto private property youre asked to leave, when youre 33 youre asked to accompany the officer :(. I do however take my little buddy on long walks and its kinda like exploring.

I'm also trying to (on a VERY tight budget) get into macro photography. I took the following photo of a spider in my bathroom a few days ago. It's around the size of the nail on your little finger. I used a ProMaster 70-300mm macro zoom with a 20mm extension tube and a Sigma flash on an extension cord. If I can finally manage to get a real job, I plan to buy a Canon 100mm macro lens.

I hope you stomped that sucker after you took his picture.

I do read a lot, but I think you're referring to other hobbies.

Cheapest is birdwatching and other nature study and astronomy. But I already own several good binoculars and nature guides.

I also like fishing. With basic gear, I don't spend a lot.

I got myself into firing my 1851 colt navy at the range. Now I am doing my part in keeping the mosquitoes away. I also picked up a 1932 mossberg model 26B that needed some work. It keeps me poking around with guns but also gets me back into refinishing and researching parts and history. Got to do something during the dry times.
Also play spider 3014 wins 5 loses. Ya sort of get the hang of it when you have lot of spare time

Motorcycles has always been it for me. I can't say it's cheaper than guns, but it hasn't been all that expensive. I have been a gun owner for maybe twenty years, but really took an interest in the last six or seven. Motorcycling has been a passion for more than 45.

Touring, rallies, commuting, sport touring, racing, vintage trials, vintage MX, trail riding, adventure touring. I did it backwards and discovered the joys of off-road riding when I was nearly fifty.

There are a few interesting bicycles in my garage, mostly 3-speeds, and mostly ridden regularly. There are a few interesting knives on a shelf in my bookcase. I am always a sucker for a new knife, for carry or for camping. I guess you could call those hobbies.

I do the NY Times crossword every day (even though it only starts to get interesting about Wednesday or Thursday), and carry a book of the Saturday puzzles for periods of waiting or down-time. Hobby? Pastime would probably be more accurate.

My other hobby has been reloading, but just getting into casting. Makes the shooting hobby much more affordable.

Nice touch on the arrangement of the patches (setting them in numerical order as much as possible). I've often kicked around the idea of making a "one patch per frame" display and then include an explanation of the elements of the patch and the unit history, but unfortunately that idea gets put in the "I'll do that someday" category:rolleyes:.

I drive the car I built - a Factory Five MkIII Roadster. It took 3 years to complete and have about 18,000 miles.

You know the rule here: pictures, or it didn't happen.

I'm going on 76, been retired almost five years, widowed, and live alone with a small, deranged rat terrier rescue dog named Moose. Very little income, so range time and ammo at today's completely insane prices are more or less out of the question.

I fish when I can--it's not often, but I have all the gear I could ever need and then some. I write, which costs me nothing but an occasional p*****-off reader. Love to cook, and can use my home-grown herbs to make very inexpensive foods taste delicious and pricey. I read a lot of history and watch TV documentaries and baseball games. No sit-coms anymore, and definitely no "reality TV" except "The First 48". Right now I'm reading Tim Weiner's Enemies: A History Of The FBI , which deals with the Bureau's investigations of spies, saboteurs and subversive organizations.

Walking the micro-mastiff keeps my legs from locking up.

Lest I forget, I'm also still a pushover for the grand old Warner Brothers cartoons of the '40's and '50's.

And of course I hang out here a lot.

My wife was so happy because I finally cleaned and orginized the basement and put shelfs up...

Two days later she came down and saw the improvised shooting range I made for my air rifel. We have a basement that is over 60 foot long so makes for a nice range....(she knew I don't do things for no good reason)

Fishing, bagpipes, hiking, lot's of reading. Currently reading a book on the Rhodesian Selous Scouts. Swimming when it gets a little warmer. Fine cutlery, especially Randalls and Doziers.

If I was back home; surfing, free diving and collecting seashells

I've gotten into air rifles, and I've always been a tinkerer.

Is tinkering a hobby?

I've got my Lionel trains, but their all up now. Mostly all postwar and prewar, with a few more modern hi-rail pieces in for good measure. I'm dreaming of an outbuilding when I can have a dedicated tinkering room, as well as a place to do canning instead of inside the house.

Home canning really isn't a hobby for us, more like a lifestyle. :D I will not joke though, it is a lot of hard work.

I've always wanted to get into live steam though. But that hobby will definitely fleece your wallet!

Maybe not the most wholesome hobby, but sure it counts! One of my favorite things to do is the never ending search for new favorite brew pub or new favorite IPA. Especially now that the weather is turning, it's hard to beat a nice patio and a cold IPA

Offshore fishing is my other hobby. Not cheap at all. Most of the time I settle for inshore.
And, as much as I love to shoot, my p/t job at a LGS/Indoor Range can get pretty dadgum busy, and after I've heard gunfire for 3 consecutive 10 hour days, I don't always wanna go shooting on my days off. I know, who'd a thunk it?
