Shortage of .22 LR, Next best thing to CCI?

have only been shooting .22lr handguns for a little more then a year now. First few months with a 50's era Colt Challenger then added a Buckmark to the shelf. The ammo that both seemed to have the most trouble with was the Remington golden bullets. Both pistols seem to like CCI mini mags and std velocity, but the best i've found has been the federal 525 bulk hp's. I can go thru a box of them with 0 issue in the BM and worst case 1 or 2 in the Colt (i'll blame part of that on its age).
So while ammo is hard to get, i dont even bother buying something like the Rem if i'm not comfortable using it. Takes the fun out of range time if i have to deal with issues.

just a newbie's .02
;)

I'm on the ant- Remington anything bandwagon. Even with the .22 crisis, if you gave me thunderbolts for free I wouldn't take them. That **** will never be put into any firearm that I paid good money for. That opinion goes back as far as about 1993.

I agree. I remember WAY (WAY) back when they first came out... Thunderbolt wasn't too bad for just plinking ammo. They really went down hill fast when they went. They are even frustrating in a single shot bolt action. ...about all they are good for is teaching the kids proper gun safety for misfires.

I've run 2 buckets of Golden Bullets through my 15-22. I find it no dirtier than any other bulk 22. Accuracy is acceptable and equivalent to other bulk maybe save Federal which mine seems to like, good but nothing to write home about. As far as reliability I've had maybe 4-8 failure to fires in the 2800 and that's a conservative guess, it has been reliable enough that it's not noteworthy. I didn't even try to restrike them but I'm pretty sure they would have went bang. I've had more miss fires in M22.

I guess I'm lucky.

Anyone have some m22 that they want to trade for some golden bullets, bullet for bullet. I've got an extra bulk box of golden bullets that will never see the outside of the safe. I'm sue someone has that much faith in golden bullets around here.

Remington Thunderbolt's are GARBAGE,Just my .02.The bullets are very loose and rotate freely and feel like they can be pulled out by hand. They are also horribly dirty and have a lot of under powered rounds as well as duds.

+1,000. Thunderbolts are the absolute worst. I've got about half of a 500 rd bulk pack I will not shoot anymore of. I had a squib round out of it that blocked the barrel of my Ruger Mark II - fortunately, I realized it and didn't put another round behind it. Then last week I shot some out of my pre-18 and got key-holing. Switched over to CCI and no problems.

I'm not overly fond of any Remington ammo, to be honest, rimfire or centerfire.

As I posted earlier in this thread, I just finished going through 2 bricks of Thunderbolts (200-300 rounds per week) in my M&P 22 without a single misfire. That's 1,000 rounds. Must be a fluke..

I've got 1,900 M22 rounds that I'd trade for golden bullets. Three full bricks of 500 and one brick missing the 100 rounds I took to the range this morning. I imagine shipping will be a bit steep though, as I had to double bag it to lug them out of Walmart and they were pretty heavy. :)

It'd be great if I could trade locally, but since you can't put ammo on craigslist, I'm not sure how I'd find someone.

PM me, and we'll see what we can figure out.

Anyone in here interested in selling any empty CCI boxes in good condition (without breaking the bank please) PM me.

I figured someone was probably selling them on ebay so I was going to look it up and link to it for you.. But you probably won't be interested in the price!

6 CCI Mini Mag Standard 22 LR 22 Rifle Plastic Ammo Box Case Prepper Storage | eBay

$23 for six empty mini mag holders?!? add in the $8.50 for shipping and you're looking at $5.20 apiece! They were $7.49 each the last time I got some at Walmart, and that came with bullets! :)

I had no idea there was even a market for this. They have it labeled as "prepper storage", so I guess that is what is driving the market?

I just like to keep a couple around to take even amounts of ammo to the range instead of bringing a bulk box and shooting who knows how much. I like taking 100 rounds each of different kinds of ammo and seeing which one groups better on paper.. And then I can keep track of how much I'm using if I know I shot 100 of a certain brand instead of "a handful".

Yeah I have been following them on ebay for a few months and the prices on there are ridiculous sometimes people are only paying a dollar less than with the ammo.... I was just hoping someone may be willing to part with some for a reasonable price if not I will hold out until I can come across some

CCI ammo and mags for my M&P 22 are giving me a headache trying to find some for a decent price

Buy a Ruger SR-22... I've shot every brand you can name. It shoots ANYTHING.....i've had only 2 FTF in 2 1/2 years, and that was because the gun was dirty.

My SR-22 is 100% with any copper plated ammo. Waxed or coated lead bullets will FTF 10% of the time. My 15-22 will shoot anything.

Win, Fed, Blazer, etc. go bang. bang, bang, bang, bang.

Remington goes bang, bang, pop, bang, click. The bangs hit the bullseye just fine. The pops require getting the ramrod out.

Since 1993 I have sent bad stuff back to Rem at least 6 times. The problem is they replace it. The last time after ranting and insisting I got my $ back. That WILL BE the last time.

I've had an M&P22 and an M&P 15-22 for about a year now, and have shot mostly Remington during that time because it's what I could find. I can't argue that it seems dirty (but I don't have too much to compare it to), but I've had virtually no problems with hundreds of rounds of Thunderbolt, Golden Bullets, Yellow Jackets and Viper. Viper is probably my least favorite because the coating gets a golden mess all over your fingers.

The few issues that I've had have been Federal American Eagle. I'm *not* saying it's bad ammo, just that my guns had the most issues with FTE and FTF with American Eagle.

Have finally been able to score a little CCI Mini-mags, looking forward to checking it out.

Edit: Forgot that I've run Remington Subsonics through both of them too, without issue. They are ~ 1050fps, so they seem to be fast enough.

This would be the perfect excuse to buy another 22. A revolver will handle any thing that will fit into the cylinder chamber's. Any brand, 22 CB caps, shorts, longs, long rifle, birdshot and blanks. I know revolver's are antiquated, out of style and considered useless but they will get you shooting.

My M&P 22 likes the Remington Golden Bullets. over 5 boxes of them and only one FTF...multiple strikes and still did not fire.

Any winchester white box bullets are ****. I have about 3,000 rds of the Winchester M22 rounds that I haven't tried out yet. I hope they will work. If not then I will set them aside for my Bolt guns.

My same opinion goes back to 1975-- Bought like 10 bricks when K-Mart had them on sale-- thought I would never goe through them- dirty doesn't even begin to tell the tale-- Just the way it is. :p:rolleyes:

I wish I had some choices! Here in Central Florida I cannot even find one 50 round box.

Each morning I call 4 different walmarts and one Dicks. Every morning I hear the same thing..........sorry!

I've tried all my usual on line suppliers.....nothing!

Anyone else old enough to remember when you could buy what was then called Remington Mohawk @ $5.50 for a 500 round brick? Now I can't even find any 22 ammo for $5.50 for a 50 round box.

I have to be honest with you. I am one of those guys standing in line every day at Walmart to pick up any .22 ammo that comes in. If you are calling Walmart they will never tell you that they have it. I see that every day. 99% of them don't know if any came in, and they will just say no to get rid of your call.
