Shot In The Hand

There have been several criticisms of my choice of a California Roster SD9VE but the extra safety features don't bother me a bit.

In particular some folks have objected to the magazine safety that prevents the gun from firing if the magazine is out. My response is that if it fires with the magazine out, no additional rounds are in the gun, so a second trigger pull would have no result.

I do have some 16 round magazines but don't really bother after the magazine starts to complain at 15, not much of a handicap.

I also appreciate that my gun has been repeatedly drop tested without firing a primer-only case. [Most likely all SD's would pass that test, but I know with certainty that my version passed.]

In our house, there is no live ammo in whatever room the gun is being cleaned or broken down.

When I was 12 years old, or so, all I had was a rifle, so pointing it in the wrong direction was easy to control, not so with pistols. When testing with snapcaps, the chimney is the only thing at risk, just in case a snapcap decides to somehow become live.

So, if I don't pack in 16 rounds and don't buy some sort of 3 round magazine extension, call me unprotected but call me safe.

=================

One more thing. The proposed law that would allow anyone in our state to open carry without a license, or even any documented training, got a bad rap from a police chief. I really hope the law goes down to defeat.

Just keep in mind that if the mag release gets hit in a close quarters struggle you wont even have the one shot. But if you are happy with your choice that is all that matters

I don't get the point of this post. So the guy shot himself! Stupid but it happens. If this is about one of those ...."if it had a safety this wouldn't have happened" then I suggest the OP look up videos on YouTube even, showing guys shooting themselves with 1911s. No amount of safeties is going to cure stupid

Arik, my aunt is somewhat of a firearms collector herself. She knew that I had just recently bought an S&W SD9VE and was just worried about the fact that the weapon might have some kind of factory defect and was just looking out for my best interest.
I am not as anal as you suggest I am, about looking on YT and people shooting themselves. I just made the post becuse of how it was presented to me from my aunt!
I am very familiar with striker fire firearms, esp. the S&W Sigma series. I own (2) of them and have owned them for almost 10 years now.
So, in ending, I was just MERELY passing on information about an incident with an SD9VE in the SD FORUM. Excuse me for trying to do something that might help someone out there to be more aware of their firearms and proper safety! :rolleyes:

That's not how it sounded. Had you said thay my aunt was worried about me knowing I have the same gun....I'd understand. But it sounded, at least to me, that your aunt heard someone shot themselves with this gun and now you're worried about it.

People shoot themselves all the time. It's unfortunate but it happens, probably weekly. People are the "proper safety". Whether watching their trigger finger or not playing kitchen table gunsmith. Without them a gun is just a bunch of parts.

Well, excuse me for not saying it up to your standards. I will try to remember in the future to try and squeeze a few extra IQ points out of my typing fingers in the future! :rolleyes:
