Should I do it?

have a look at the dan wesson line of 1911 guns. i have one and have shot the heck out of it and keeps going. mine has bomar-type rear sight and many other upgrade type features for not much than the desert eagle.

All in all, I'd buy the Springfield and do the mods with whatever pocket money you can come up with.

Skip the "DEAGLE"(as it's nicknamed). So far the history on quality is spotty at best. You can probably find more info on one at one of the bigger generic gun forums like THR or TFL. The kids like buying the newest, latest and greatest, thinking it's like a new TV, with their new is always better mentality and the like.
the Desert Eagle is liked by the kids for the price point, but lot's of flaming about the quality for the most part. But, since it's a true 1911 fixing the issues are not too difficult by buying quality replacement parts from one of the major makers.
I read where there were a couple of slamfires and plenty of FTF/FTE issues related to the mags they supplied.
It appeared that most of the feed issues were resolved when better mags were used.
Forgive me, I'm not a 1911 owner, so I'll probably use the wrong description here, The one kid had to replace his main recoil springs, guide rod and bushing to get the barrel to drop correctly when ejecting after the shot - whatever that means. Until he made all those changes the casing wouldn't eject completely, and sometimes not at all.
At any rate, best of luck.

That is on my list...I can't find one, however. I want the Compact DS, and it's out of stock everywhere, both in local gun shops and on several internet sites I have checked. I can find the 5" stainless model on Gun Genie, but I'd really like to have the 4.25" model.

Watch AuctionArms.com I bought one there Sunday but the bidding began a week earlier. They seem to have a supply of S&W in varying 1911 models.

While I like the full size 1911, I also enjoy owning the shorter models.

As to the DE, I think a person needs to own various types of firearms, even if they are in a common caliber with other presently owned guns.

I am also will to bet a steak dinner that the DE does not stay with you more than a year or so. Not one DE owner I I have known kept theirs over two yrs. Not knocking them either but they are bulky, hard to conceal and not much to look at. I owned one in 44mag for about a year. It had to go although I did not fire it often but I have a lot of other guns that I am not selling that I never fire. I just did not like the DE.

I have a desert eagle 1911g ser#92 I also have a colt combat elite,a kimber custom2,a s&w pc945 and a caspian custom. The desert eagle shoots as well as any of them and the fit and finish is as good as any factory gun i own. I have had zero malfunctions or issues with it. all my shooting friends have been impressed and several have ordered their own. I would not hesitate to buy another one.

If you want a "knock around" 1911, look at a Rock Island Armory. All steel, solid and accurate, and very reasonably priced. Go to the 1911 Website and you will see a lot of reviews.

Just to clarify...what I am talking about is a 1911 style pistol, which looks just like virtually any other 1911 pistol regardless of make. I'm not talking about the usual DE pistol...I have no interest in those.

As of now, I have the following 1911s in .45 ACP: Colt Combat Elite, DE 1911G, Kimber Pro CDP II, Sig Sauer 1911R XO (1 of 250), and a Springfield Loaded. I want a S&W Compact ES to finish my collection.
