OK Folks,

After just a little more than 4000 rounds through my M&P FS 9mm do I need to change any parts as a preventative maintenance measure?

I don't have one of these, but I change the recoil spring in my semi autos after 1500 -2000 rounds. Probably more often than necessary, but I don't want to wait for failure or a malfunction.

I want to follow this. I have close to 7000 rounds with my FS9. Not a carry gun and runs great. I guess I should be looking for a new recoil spring.

Inusuit,

Thanks for your input. I have heard this suggestion before. The gun has never never had any issues at all and is incredibly reliable. Never a misfire never had a failure to eject or feed.

While I don't mind spending the money and sure don't want to experience a failure during competition I wonder what failures anyone has seen with the spring and at what round count.

When I am competing with an M&P Pro 9 5", I keep a recoil spring assembly, trigger spring, and striker assembly as spares.
Only thing I ever had fail during a match, I chipped the striker tip.

I change springs at the end of a year of competition, just because. Say around 10-12000 rounds. The recoil spring is an ISMI flat-wound spring, the best there is, IMHO.

At the moment the M&P is shelved, and I am shooting only revolver. I put the M&P away with fresh springs, a thorough cleaning, and Brownells action lube on the frame points, so it is ready to pick up and shoot when I wish.

I was talking to one of the techs at S&W last year and the subject of replacing the recoil springs came up. He said they failure test them to 50K rounds and then quit testing. He also told me they don't have a recommended maintenance schedule. I shoot a lot so I replace the recoil spring every year (which is over 50K rounds). I also started replacing the striker assembly every 10K due to failures I experienced. I replace the trigger return spring every time I have the trigger out for whatever reason. I've had one fail at 60K. Other than that it's just clean and lube it every once in a while.

OKFC05 and Bkreutz,

Thanks much for the info. Looks like all I need to do is keep shooting. At a rate of about 2,000 rounds a year it will be a while before I need to change any parts.

Checkout Speed Shooters Speciaties, https://www.speedshooterspecialties.com, and G&R Tactical, https://www.gandrtactical.com for spare parts.

I already bought spare RSAs, strikers and a few odds and ends for my M&Ps (FS and Compact). I even got barrels from Midway. I may never need them at the rate I shoot but I'm ready if I do.

Shield specific parts are hard to come by.

I'm trying to do the same for all my handguns.
