Bought my M34 new for $105. That's ben a while ago.
Taught my daughter how to shoot with it. Now she claims it.
Only picture I have is with a M19. Not a good one at that.

This Model 34-1 left the factory in 1968 and has matching numbered grips,
It also has a serial number that actually places its frames DOB in the mid 1950's.
Guessing it stuck around the factory vault until frame demand reached supply produced ...
Serial No# 1183XX Cheers

Screwthread...

Thanks again for all the photos!
There are some fine examples of the 34 and it's Stainless brother (sister?) the 63 around in our community.

If all goes well, I will have my own 34 in my hands by Tuesday, or Wednesday.
The Herrett's are already in my posession, I do need to find a screw for it. I did know that there was no screw, but I only paid 16 USD for them, still acceptable I think?

But I do have another quest now:
Can someone tell me what size screw and pitch Herrett used for the grips?

Model 34 is here!

I'm happy to announce that my very own S&W Model 34 is healthy and well in the safe!
The gun is clean, the trigger is crisp, rifling sharp, it looks and feels really great.
The grips are indeed the original fitting and have the same serial as the gun.
I think they have not been off the gun often as they came off it quite difficult.

It is an elegant little gun, quite small compared to it's brother the 617:

Hey, model17, those look like the same smooth targets my 4" 34 wears today. I have retained the original standard grips & they are numbered to the gun. I was surprised to find that as it was a new gun purchase in 1978.

34: Great shooter!

Today was the first day I could shoot the little gem; and boy, did it shoot! A shame that I forgot to bring back the targets, to show you the first results...
We shoot at ten meters, one hand, five at one target.
The first five were four in the 7-8 all in ONE hole and one lousy 5. The next were in the nine-ring after two clicks of the rearsight, four in one hole and again one flyer, a six.
After that I could not repeat the four-in-one, but three in one and twice two-holers on one card makes me a happy shooter!

This Model 34 brings back the joy in shooting for me, as my arm is still not hurting after 150 shots.
The original grip is a bit too small as was expected, looks great on the gun but for shooting it has to go in favor of the Herrett grips, when I have the right screw for it.
We live in a Metric world, but the search is on! :)

Here is my M-34 with an old set of stags. Great for B-B-Q's.

Same gun, but with S&W Target Grips.

Round butt works great inside the square butt S&W Target Grips. Best of both worlds.

My Dad bought this one back in the mid 70's . Mine now for the past 9 yrs . :(
I have the original grips and box . :)

Thank you for showing that RB=>SqB grip 2K7.

That does mean I let a nice set of grips (stock?) pass!
Someone had a Round Butt target set for sale online and although it looked as if it would fit my Model 34 SqB, I wasn't sure...

I keep saying it; there are some nice grips around!

For function, target style is better, but I do love the looks of 'fancy' grips!
Now if only I find some Stag, MOP or (yellow) Ivory, combined with a Tyler T.

Overhere we are not allowed to 'show-off' our weapons, not even the cantina of the Shooting Society...
So it would be a pleasure all for myself ;)

Sorry.....grips made for the round butt will NOT fit the square butt properly.

The reverse is tue, target grips maded for the square butt will fit the round butt as long as they are configured like the targets grips shown in my posting where the backstrap "disappears" into the wood as illustrated.

Any idea when one with serial number M978xx would have been made?

Thanks

Dugk

Herrett's fitted

At long last, I got access again to my little lathe, after clearing a lot of stuff in the shed.
So, I made a screw for the Herrett's Shooting Stars *.
It was a bit of an 'odd' size screw; the outside was 0.125", according my Engineers Handbook, this is smaller than UNC #6 (0.137"), which I made first, but that one did not fit.
It was more of a #5 with thread as the #6's 32 TPI. Anyway, a lathe comes handy with those kind of things; you can make your own odd sizes! I hope it gives the little gun a bit more 'control'.
It looks more like a grown-up too, although that was certainly not the purpose as I liked the tiny appearance.

The Herrett's indeed gave the littl'un more 'control'. But the built-in ambidextrous finger-rest pressed against my triggerfinger, so much that it became quite numb after a couple of shots.
I took some wood away from the righthand side.
Have to clean up the checkering to look better, the re-modelling is still in the test-phase, but this is how it looks now:

The original diamond service-stocks do look nicer though, IMHO

So much so that I even bought some service grips for my 617 this week!
Yes; with the diamonds and for a nice price! On eBay, I had bid, but not won: $71 USD...
But on a Dutch site I found some for 15 Euros!

The K's have a better grip for my hands when shooting DA.
They have this number, and I was told that they came off a Model 10:

Fifteen years ago I started buying Model 34s and 63s for my grandchildren. I have nine of them, three blued Model 34s, three 63s and three nickle 34s. All four inch. I've bought several other J framed .22lrs also. My grandchildren love their guns and shoot them anytime they come to visit.

I did pay $325.00 for one of them, but the others were a lot less. Haven't bought one in about ten years and I hope my childern have learned what causes babies cause they are a lot more expensive now.

Wish I knew how to post pictures, but alas, they are all new in the box or 98% in the box. Many years ago nobody wanted them, just the Semi Autos.....
