Sig 225 anyone?

I have a Kramer inside the waistband holster for my 225 and it works great. Lead time wasn't too bad either.

Since then the little bastard has grown on me. Specifically the fit is great and the double action pull is heavy enough for me to feel comfortable holstering it with round in the chamber and hammer down.

The first SIG I ever fired was a friend's P225. I was underwhelmed, but eventually had to admit it is a pretty nice little 9mm. Just about the right size. Very comfortable. Accurate. This was so long ago that hollow-point ammo was just becoming available. I don't recall ever seeing the gun malfunction.

Many years later now, I had to switch rather than fight, so to speak, and bought a P6 for my own use when the German police guns were "dumped" here. It does feel better in the hand, but overall I am more comfortable with a 3913 (location of the slide stop, and the thumb and magazine safeties). It would be pretty hard to ND a 3913 while holstering, if you engage the safety, though I suppose it might be possible.

All that said in the 3913s behalf, holding it is like holding a slightly rounded 1x3. I have a similar impression of the P239s. The SIG P225/P6 is a much better feeling gun. The location of the safety on the 3913 (and its "reverse" action) does not bother me nearly as much as the location of the SIG's slide stop.

I just picked up a p6 recently. I did not hem and haw this time because prices on these are going up a bit from where they were. Some local shops are selling them in excess of $400, now. And after all the shipping and transfer fees if you get a deal online it is over $400 anyway. I found a small time local dealer that is in over his head with buisness now that must not have known about the price increase and demand for these and picked up one for $320 with surplus holster and 2 mags. I than was wandering through one of the big box hunting and outdoor stores that sells used guns and I could not beleive what I was seeing in their marked down case a very hardly used p6 mag for $4.99!!!,someone forgot to tell them these things are actually worth something. My gain on their uneducation.

Sigs are one of my favorite pistols(along with Smiths of course). I am a devotee of S&W pistols & revolvers, but Sigs are the equal of Simths autos, and in some areas slightly superior. I rate the 225/P6 on a par with the 3913/14 and the 3906/04 series, and their many variations. I would carry either Smith or Sig and feel comfortable. The only thing I insist on with a Sig is the short trigger which I really like. Mags for Sigs are sometimes available used as are Smiths mags. Topgunsupply.com usually has Sig mags at a reasonable price. I find Sig mags to be among the absolute best available and the only thing I have ever had to do with one was replace the spring, and not as frequently as Smith mag srpings.

My P6 surplus shoots every type of ammo I feed it and hits the target better than I aim.

I have no issues with them .

Since my original post I've had an opportunity to shoot my Sig P6 (yep, it is a P6 and not a 225 as I first thought) at some reactive steel targets along with Bettis1. I must admit I was really surprised how well the P6 handles, especially when shooting rapidly at a line of reactive steel targets. I also shot a new Colt Combat Commander .45ACP at the same targets. While the .45 ACP rounds make a more resounding noise when they hit the steel targets, I found I could not shoot the Combat Commander as rapidly and accurately as I could the P6. The P6 handles recoil better, and is easier to keep on target when shooting rapidly. Makes me want to try a Sig 226 or 229, but then I am also
looking a well preserved old S&W Model 39 my gun dealer has. Although I carried a Model39 on a three day combat operation in Vietnam in 1969 I never had an opportunity to shoot it. I had a used a S&W Model 52 years ago to take five first place awareds in KD shooting at Quantico, many years ago, and had a great deal of confidence in that particular pistol. Funny how one's ideas and tastes change with time.

You'll notice that a P229 is heavier and wider. I traded my P6 some time back, but still have a P229R in .357 Sig. They're beefy guns but easy to like.

Double stack 5900 series auto are still cheap and easy to find if you want a DA S&W. The 39s begat the smaller 3900 series which are also worth seeking out if you like single stack autos.

There was a time when I wouldn't even look at a 9mm handgun, regardless of make or model. Last night, while shooting at the local indoor range, I noticed the dealer had a really nice 3904 (fixed-sights) and despite my self-imposed moratorium on spending, I found myself considering buying it.

In a way, that 3904 is similar to the P6 - in concept, at least. Both are very nice, thin, comfortable pistols. If that S&W had had a flatter slide release, and had not had the fool ambidexterous thumb safety levers , I probably would have it sitting on my desk right now.

Anyway, there is a lot to be said for these little P6s. I agree with the post above where the writer mentions he has had no trouble with various modern HP ammunition in his P6. That has been my experience, too. And I find the little pistol fits so well in my hand that even the extraordinarily heavy DA trigger pull does not seem to cause any problems.

I am probably going to replace the issue sights with the standard SIG "contrast" sights (bar-dot arrangement) and call it good. The pistol really just doesn't need anything else. For the price paid, I consider it quite a bargain. No offense to our friend GF, but the 229 is a boat anchor compared to the P6. A lot more horsepower there, to be sure, but a chore to carry around. I suppose GF, with all the goodies he likes to haul, hardly notices it.

I shot my P6 for the first time this week and was impressed. I have had a 229 and a 220 for years, but the P6 is thinner. I had a couple of problems with the slide locking back on a loaded magazine, but that was with some reloaded hp's that may not have been hot enough. I had no problems with Blazer round nose.

P225 & p228

If you like the new P225, you should try the P228, which I believe to be the superior gun. The P228 hasn't been available on a normal commercial basis for some time, but recently a few have become available from a Sig contract overrun at about 800-850$. Many people use MecGar magazines in their Sig pistols with complete satisfaction. These mags are appreciably cheaper than the Sig supplied mags I have heard that Mecgar actually makes the magazines sold by Sig. if interested, check out Midway USA for sig mags.

I like Sigs myself. from right to left 220 compact, 226, 232, 220, mosquito, 229, 229. mod 38 and mod 60

Depending on where you are the P6s are still available for $300-400 with two mags at the shows.
Pro Mag from Midway is an excellent sub for the factory mags at less than $20 each. Desantis also has several holsters that work fine with the P225/P6.
I have had both guns, and currently have a P6 that works every bit as well as my previous P225 at about half of the cost.
My only gripe is the lack of availability of replacement grips.
Jeff Cooper was once asked if he would rather be shot by a 9MM or a .45 ACP. He replied that would rather not be shot by either, but if it had to be then a 9MM was preferred. So all that said, I woud rather have a 9MM over nothing. And if you keep your gun clean and maybe polish the feed ramp anything should feed and function.
