My 1958 M41 is having a small adjustment problem with the rear sight on it. It adjusts up and down fairly well but is not able it seems to be OK to move past the midway point in the sight line. The actual screw will not turn any further yet the face is not moving far enough. Can they be lubricated or cleaned in any way. Its the original sight to the gun? Any suggestions could be helpfull.

Had the exact problem with mine. Bought a '79 with a 7" bbl
(note the rear sight is different on the 5.5" guns) and the rear sight screw (windage) would only rotate less than half a rotation in either direction. I solved the problem using a solvent called "Kroil" which is some sort of liquid wrench/wd40 concoction. I flooded the rear sight with the stuff and let it soak for several days, reflooding it at regular intervals, and trying the adjustment screw each time.

On about the fourth day, the screw broke loose and I had free rotation and sight movement in both direction.

I was ready to either rebuild the rear sight with a new blade, windage screw, and nut and had located the parts, or to replace the entire rear sight. No need. Good luck.

Thank You very Much both Bumper and Tom for your help. I suspected that might be the thing to do and now know it is for sure. :)
