Always loved the guy even when the James Bond movies got so silly they nearly jumped the shark. :)

R.I.P. Sir Roger Moore.

Roger Moore has passed away at age 89 from cancer. He was the best Bond that wasn't Sean Connery.

Sorry to see him go, but IMHO, he was the 2nd worse Bond, the worst being George Lazenby.

Connery nailed what Ian Flemming had written, but I have to say that I think if Flemming were alive today, he would like the roll Daniel Craig has portrayed: aloof, rogue but fiercely loyal to Queen and country.

He would not have been mistaken for a "great" actor, and would have probably admitted that; he picked his roles accordingly.

But he was always entertaining and brought a classic British style of light, understated humor to any movie he was in. I enjoyed his films.

Moore was my least favorite Bond; I thought he played the role as a comedy and nearly turned the series into a campy parody.
I much preferred him in other roles, and he was always nattily attired, even in combat!
I saw an interview with him in which he said, "I loathe guns." although he made quite a fortune using them on the big screen.

Amen!

One of the things that stood out about Sean Connery's portrayal, was his ability to bring a sense of danger and peril to the character. You knew James Bond was in lethal danger. And his tit-for-tat behavior to the bad guys was human, and expected.

I always got the impression that Moore's portrayal was more of a send-up than honest character portrayal.

When I read all the novels, I could only envision Sean Connery as 007. I do believe that Pierce Brosnan could bring off the portrayal, but only if the movies were a bit more like the books. The books were all exciting enough without the "whiz bang" special effects that took over the genre.

And you're spot on about Daniel Craig. I wouldn't want to encounter him.

IMDB says that Moore and Lee Marvin got into a fight while filming Shout at the Devil (1976). Surprisingly maybe, Moore won. Marvin said, "The guy is built like granite. Nobody will ever underestimate him again."

He was good as The Saint.

We lost a "Bond"

Sir Roger Moore, who played James Bond in 7 movies, has died today at the age of 89.

<<<SOURCE>>>

He played Bond in the following movies:

Live and Let Die (1973)
The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Moonraker (1979)
For Your Eyes Only (1981)
Octopoosey (1983) (had to modify the name because of the curse filters ;) )
A View to a Kill (1985)

I think I saw all of these at the theaters when they came out. He did a different, but good portrayal of Bond than Sean Connery. After Sean Connery, I think he was my next favorite James Bond.

Makes me wonder how Sean Connery is doing nowadays also.

Sad to see that he's gone. I think his version of Bond was a bit too prissy for my taste, though. The "King of the Bonds" was (of course) Sean Connery. Hope he'll be around for a while longer, even in "character" roles.

John

He was good in "The Wild Geese" as well. I believe he used a Browning High Power when he made some dude eat about a kilo of cocaine.

It is a shame that he has past away. I liked him as Bond, somewhat. We was very anti-gun so that left me a little luke warm to him as Bond.

I liked him best in the movie "Shout at the Devil" WWI adventure with Lee Marvin, set in Africa.

RIP
