Will a slide from a 915 fit & fuction properly on a 5906 frame & will a slide from a 5906 fit & function properly on a 915 frame, just wondering how the 2 tone look would be.

The part numbers do not adequately answer the question as they are different materials, thus would have different part numbers.

What I believe is the determining factor is lock up. I believe the barrels lock up into the slides and maybe also the frames differently on the 5906 and the 915, making exchanging slides not possible.

The next issue, then is whether the entire top halves will interchange, as opposed to just the slides. If the frames match up exactly, and I mean exactly, the maybe, but I would not try it.

Ithink you speek words of wisdom and will not try to switch either. Thanks

Both slide and barrel is inter-changeable. I know this because I have used the slide from my 915 on my 5906, and the barrel from my 5906 on my 915. Barrels from both are identical with identical lock up lugs and bosses. The biggest difference I can see is the rear sight's on the 5906 has Novak low profile dove tailed sight. The 915 has the 2nd gen smith and wesson sight.

It should fit and work. If the slide goes on the frame, and you can do a functions check, you shouldn't have a problem. Even though the parts should exchange there may be exceptions due to manufacturing tolerances.

I've swapped slides before between different models as well, but there was a definite difference between how the slides fit on the alternate frame. One was pretty tight, the other pretty sloppy. Both slides fit normally on their parent frames.

Gents,

Just did it as a proof-of concept. My spare (complete) 5906 slide assembly fit on the 915's frame. When I tried to swap barrels, I found that the 915 barrel's hood was considerably slimmer than was the 5906's. No-Go with any other swaps outside of the complete slide assemblies.

Other than that, I function tested (with a BIC pen) and checked the tightness of the slide on the 915 frame. I get .001-.002" clearance.

The obvious deciding factor will be a range test (more so for accuracy potential than for functionality). I like the 2-tone look.

After he's done with my 39-2 (1979), Karl Sokol will be sent the 915/06 for his magic. I will ask for a complete de-horn with his expert "High-Grip" mod and sculpting of the grip tang.

I'm happy at the result. It looks very nice and sets off the piece quite nicely. The now-spare 915 slide will be fit to my 659 lower and will be off to Karl for his deft hand.

Hope this helps dispel the rumor of non-functionality.
