Smith and Wesson 640-Experiences?

I would look around for a 640-1 before I would buy a later version. Just personal preference. Why tempt fate although my wife has a 3 inch 60 with the lock and has had no issues with a thousand rounds or so thru it. (mostly 38 spl w/ maybe a couple dozen 357s) I just don't like the look of the dang hole in the side.

As far as the 640 platform in general, you need one (or two or three). I prefer one for each armpit.:D

One more thought....I'd keep the 60-9 and save up for the 640. This was the first J magnum in that platform and they're getting harder to find. Sometimes a hammer is good.

Go over to the Hogue Grip site and they have a new J Frame grip for the 357 coming out called the Tamer. It is made specifically for Centennials and Bodyguards. With a high "horn" to cover the rear of the frame. Hogue promises that they will be released soon.

Remember if you bob the spur off the hammer of your Model 60 you still retain the single action cocking option.

60-9

Instead of bobbing the hammer you might see if you can get a second hammer bobbed for it from a gunsmith like I did for this 60-7 that I've used for years.

I still have the original hammer if I want to reinstall it - say if I wanted to sell it in its original configuration. Like that will ever happen - selling it I mean.

That's the plan. I hope to never have to sell my S&Ws....I'd probably go through my other guns before those if I had to.

Thanks for the input and pictures so far, everyone!

Do you have a link? I've looked all over Hogue's site and can't find it...

I'm a fan of the 640 but I just don't trust the lock.... Send it to Karl Sokol at Chestnut Mountain Sports for lock removal and other work. My Smiths always go to him for front night sight and trigger work along with lock removal if it has one.

I have carried my 640-1 since 96 as a backup and off duty. Still have the original goodyears on it. It is fed with GD's for SB and they are tame compared to the 158 grain magnum loads. I still enjoygetting the wrist bent back every now and then with the full power loads. It is hard to find full power 158's around here so I don't shoot many of them anymore. It is the most carried out of all my pistols, and is very accurate for a compact handgun; much more than the baby plastics.

There is a no lock in the classifieds for cheaper, if you domt like the lock you will meer be happy with one

I currently have a model 60-9 .357 mag that I use for carry right now, however I have discovered (as everyone has) that the hammer is very easy to snag.

Cover the hammer with your thumb and place the thumb in the proper position as you bring the gun horizontal.

Has anyone here had a 640 lock up with some of the real hot magnum loads, like 110 grs (I know I've heard of it in some of the airlites and airweights, but not yet about the steel guns)? And is that a reasonable price for what it is in your area of the woods?

Michael Bane mentioned on his podcast that he can repeatedly cause the lock to prematurely engage. The formula is a light gun firing hot loads under a heavy bullet. The 640 should not have any trouble with any self-defense load up to 158 grains.

I love mine and will hold onto it for as long as I "can". I carry it in a Bianchi #6 and keep it stoked with 125gr Speer GD .357's. I paid more for mine than you would pay for the one you talked about, but I didn't mind as I was specifically looking for a nice one without the lock or MIM parts. They're never going to make 'em like this again.

Good luck!

My latest GB find. A pretty much unfired 640-1 no lock with forged parts. I added the XS front sight.
