Carry means carry - not just have it at home because it is too uncomfortable. The best compromise between really carrying and stopping power is probably a 642 in 38 special or an M&P Compact. both can be carried in a pocket holster, although 9mm ammo is lighter and the ounce or two seems to make a difference.
Think of it this way: The M&P 9 compact is like a 12 shot J frame in your pocket.
