Hello everyone

I'd like to buy a Smith and Wesson M&P MOE Magpul in OD Green. Unfortunately no stores seem to have them in OD Green with the discounts for LEO/Military/Qualified professionals.

So I was thinking that I would buy one in all black or FDE magpul, sell those parts and buy OD Green and replace them. My questions are,

1) What are your thoughts?
2) Would I be able to sell FDE or Black faster/sooner?
3) What would you do?

I think you will lose money on that kind of deal. MOE gear is pretty cheap new, so not a lot of demand for MOE take offs at a price that will net you new MOE in a different color.

I would buy one in basic black and be happy, but I'm not one who really cares about the color.

I bought a Colt 6920 in FDE...like it a lot...but....bought one in black....now happy camper. My MP 15 came with Black furniture, I replaced it with the new gray SL stuff from Magpul and lake it better now. As previously stated CTR stocks (better than MOE) and handguards have been priced one third off lately by many distributors so buy what you want and save the other parts fomr a future build. Buy black and pm me if you want to sell CHEAP :-)

Yea looks are a big thing to me.

I understand the different magpul but what is CTR?

I know id lose money, but im wondering if there is more of a demand for FDE or Black magpul MOE parts. Black is priced higher when buying the S&W M&P Magpul MOE from retail. IBmikey, unfortunately i'm pretty sure cheap for the parts i'd be replacing is $30, which would mean i'm better off doing FDE and selling everything for $20 : )

I thought about the Colt, but the S&W comes out cheaper with the LE Discount and the manufacturer discount.

You could look at as the discounts paid for the different furniture that you wanted, so you came out to the same price as without discounts but got what you wanted...

I know my wife could twist it someway where she could convince herself that she got what she wanted and saved money in the process. :D

I'm guessing that black is the more common color for AR's, so you might have a slightly better chance of finding someone with a bug to convert their black AR to FDE.

You're going to have a challenge though selling the handguard because the MOE has a mid length gas system and the handguard that comes on the rifle won't fit a carbine length gas system, which are on the majority of AR's out there.

You may want to just get the color you prefer, because you may end up getting stuck with it for whatever reason.

Unfortunately it's only fde or black. No type of green = /

So my understanding of carbine vs mid length is simply the length right? Carbine is shorter?

Carbine = m4
Full length =m16
Mid length = in between?

I went thru the same thing deciding on Color. I finally decided on the FDE. Decided I can adjusted color in so many more ways than a black rifle can. I also, changed out the stock for the MAGPUL STR stock. It much more adaptable for various uses and slings. Dont know why Magpul skimps on that model stock

Yea. What do you guys think of this "build"

S&W M&P MOE in FDE

Swap out for OD Green
Buttstock FAB with picatinny rail. $115
FAB contour grip
$25
Magpul hand guard (whatever that piece that goes around the barrel is)
$50?

And I think I'd be able to sell my FDE Magpul for 50 to 75?

Thoughts? Those prices are approximate from what I just looked at. Interestingly magpul doesn't make magpul sl or m lok in midlength, only carbine. : /

The M16 has a 20" barrel with a gas port that is approximately 7" from the muzzle end of the barrel. This a rifle length gas system.

The M4 has a 14.5" barrel with a gas port that is approximately 7" from the muzzle end of the barrel. This is the a carbine length gas system. The gas port is the same distance relative to the muzzle as the original M16 design; however, it's much closer to the upper receiver.

Civilian rifles can't have a barrel length less than 16" without a special permit. Most standard AR's with 16" barrels maintain the same carbine length gas system as the shorter barreled M4; therefore, the gas port is the same relative distance from the upper receiver as the M4 but it's further (approx 9") from the muzzle end of a 16" barrel.

A mid length gas system returns the gas port to the original 7" from the muzzle on a 16" barrel. Thus, the gas port and integrated front sight gas block are 2" forward relative to the upper receiver compared to a carbine length system. This also means that the MOE handguard on the S&W MOE Mid is 2" longer than the typical handguard for an AR15 with a carbine length gas system. Thus, the handguard off the S&W MOE Mid won't fit most AR-15's with the M4 style carbine length gas systems.

Clay, you asked what a CTR stock is in a previous post, it is the same as the MOE, retaining it's light weight and ergonomics but with the addition of a friction lock to remove the rattle and movement of the MOE. Costs a little more but well worth it.

Thanks for the great answers guys. Really appreciate it. Huge learning curve. I thought about building my own, but I can't imagine it being too much cheaper to build my own with the s&w MIL/LEO discount.

Building really isn't cheaper but usually it gives you exactly what you want for less money than buying a rifle and then replacing items to make it what you want.

However, in today's market, I'm not so sure... With some shopping around, there are some really good deals to be found on complete rifles.

So other than the actual functional differences, I guess "structurally" the Carbine is only 1.5" smaller than the mid length? the difference seems to be exaggerated in pictures.

Well I look at it this way. Black matches everything. The different colors only have grip, stock, magazine, and fore grip the same color. receiver barrel are still black. Then you have to find color coordinated magazines which Magpul no longer makes so paint is the option. Then again you could get the black and if you don't like it cerakote or duracoat the whole firearm. I have a S&W MOE older carbine length, black and a Sig MOE OD. I like the MOE and the Smith is a mid length now.

Hmm. Can't decide between sig sauer m400 carbine or the s&w I linked. The sig would cost about $150 more but it would be carbine but then I'd guess I'd have to switch to 14.5" barrel

Just read that above linked article, too funny, some guy actually posted the text a few posts before that, but because this one had pics, I und r stood it better

Yup I'm stupid. Had another guy explain to me in person about carbine and all that. I think I'm going to buy the gun I originally listed! And yes I know again you can't get 14.5" barrel without nfa
