Well I was referring to the over inflation due to Obama and Sandy hook. Wondering if you guys think it's back to normal, has it always cost near a quarter per round? I pay less but I buy the ****ty wolf ammo. I'd like to get brass for that price.
"Normal" changes every year. It hasn't always cost 25¢ per round. Ammo prices just go up. I've shot pistols longer than I have long guns. I remember when a 50rd box of 115gr FMJ 9mm practice ammo was $8.99. Now it's $16.
For plinking and practice, there's nothing wrong with Russian manufacture, steel case, copper washed mild steel jacketed ammo. If it gets you more trigger time, good. The copper washed mild steel jacket projectiles will wear out your barrel faster, but the money saved in ammo costs equals the cost of a new barrel. It's a wash.
If you want take a step into the rabbit hole...

If the ranges within reasonable distance from me allowed the use of bi-metal jacketed ammo, I'd still be using it. I have 500 rounds of it in my ammo can.
The only way to get below 25¢ per round is to load your own. Using the most basic equipment...
+ dies, calipers, case lube, a cheap ultrasonic cleaner, scale, & consumables
If you think you'll reload, then brass case ammo is the way to go. Affix a brass catcher to your AR, and save the cases. Pick up strays at the range. If you need to buy brass case, Wolf Gold is good stuff.

I haven't had much time to reload, so I've been buying the least expensive brass case practice ammo out there. I'm on my 2nd case of Wolf Gold and will order another case next month.
