Smith Model 547 9mm

Recent family acquisition through inheritance. Can anyone tell me what year and the value of this fine revolver is? I would appreciate it. S/N ABK6455 3"

I plan on keeping it, but I am really interested in knowing the year of manufacture and estimated value. It has yellow front and rear sights as well. it came with about 5 speed loaders too.

eb07, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, it looks to have been shipped between October, 1982 and December, 1982. The yellow marking on the sight is more than likely paint and can be removed fairly easily. Your M547 does not appear to have the pinned barrel which was deleted in 1982. It also appears to be the 3" round butt model. The 4" version is more rare. The grips shown are not original to the model.

Value, that is a tough question. Value will depend on the conditon, which looks good but the pics are rather dark, whether you have the original box, original grips and accessories. I have not seen enough of them sell to give you an informed opinion on the value. I have seen them listed from $850 to $1200. I believe 5Wire, one of our members, has a pricing chart. Others will come along shortly with a more informed opinion on the value. I believe you should keep it.

I suspect you could get $800 without trying too hard.

I believe the 3"RB to be more desirable regardless of production numbers.

The 547 is a highly sought after model and in that shape
around here would bring 700 -900
As stated the yellow is probably just someones paint job
and is not factory. The rubber grips are also aftermarket
add ons. With the 3" barrel and round butt frame it would
make a nice carry piece or just fun at the range.
The 4" version is a little rarer and brings a small premium
over the 3".
Take it out, shoot it, and enjoy it.

The 547 has an interesting history and is a really special revolver. I quite like it. If money was no issue I'd get one myself.

What ammo type does it work best with? (Non adjustable sights so I guess it shoots differently depending on ammo type?)

My local dealer has one in "as-new" condition. But the price is high

It could be the photos, but it appears that the front sight was modified to raise the point of impact. As mentioned, the grips were swapped out as well. See if the original round butt target stocks are still available, they've become fairly desirable.

I found the original grips when I was going through some stuff. What a difference. I am just not a pachmayr guy.

Congrats on the gun and finding the grips. It now looks like it should and those grips are not cheap if you can find them.

Oh Yes! The grips are nice! I'd put the rubber grips back on for range use and the wood grips for display.

I'm looking at purchasing a 547. I can go either 3" or 4" since one of each length is available in the condition I want. I've always shot revolvers in the 6" barrel length so this will be my 1st shorter barrel revolver. I thought I'd ask for opinions on which length would be a good first purchase.

They are nice. Been looking for one for a year. I went back and forth with a guy for a few weeks but his prices were stupid high. But his was also cherry. I want a shooter.

The one I bought new some years back, a 4" model, had the standard S&W wood grips. Several others that purchased over the years also had the standard wood grips, even on a 3" model.
