New Self Defense Handguns Offer High-Grade Features at Affordable Price Point

Smith & Wesson Corp. today announced two new handgun models designed to assist with personal protection and home defense needs. The new SD9 VE™ and SD40 VE™ semi-automatic pistols, chambered in 9mm and .40 S&W, combine value with enhanced features to deliver top-grade performance in a reliable option for home and personal protection.

The design of the new SD9 VE and SD40 VE pistols incorporates the best features of the Smith & Wesson SD and Sigma models and evolves them into a new generation of pistol that delivers on function and price.

The foundation of the SD VE is the lightweight polymer frame, designed for both comfort and durability. The Self Defense Trigger (SDT™) provides a smooth, consistent trigger pull, enhancing both accuracy and user confidence. The accompanying stainless steel slide features aggressive front and rear slide serrations for improved handling and is fitted with white-dot front and rear sights.

For optimal comfort and control, the SD VE features an 18° natural point of aim, an ergonomic grip, aggressive front and back strap texturing and textured finger locators placed directly above the trigger guard on both sides.
The SD VE also features a universal Picatinny-style equipment rail for optional accessories.

The SD9 VE is available in 16+1 or 10+1 magazine capacity while the SD40 VE comes standard in 14+1 or 10+1. Both models have an unloaded weight of 22.7 ounces and a slim profile of 1.29 inches. The 4-inch barrel and overall length of 7.2 inches, makes the SD VE fully compatible for personal protection or home defense measures.

The SD VE has a suggested retail of $379, comes standard with two magazines and Smith & Wesson's lifetime service policy.

It looks like its the same as a gen 1 SD. The only difference is the polished slide!!!

Ya but they dropped the front night site and polished the slide? I just expected a little more. Glock is selling the two tone exo so now amith is also!

Seems to me they did the right thing keeping the SD. Better trigger than a Sigma, lighter and a tad smaller for better concealment, and though some ike the beef in the Sigma, you can always add a 10 dollar rubber sleeve to make it thicker- but you can't take off any from the Sigma grip. People gave em a hard time for having Sigma, SD and M&P, they agreed, removed the older model, kept the new with the advantages I listed. Sounds right to me.

Went to F.F.F here in Canton Oh. and got the New S&W SD9 in Stainless Slide, $299.99, NIB 2 mags....i have not seen it in 2 tone, take a look...the rear sight is NOT the same from last year (M&P) trigger feels about the same too me

I looked at 3 dirrent web pages, all they say about sights is front & rear white dots. Doesn't say what they're made of, but if they were GOOD ones I think they'd say it. It sure isn;t exactly the same as an SD-1, mine has tritium front, 2-white-dot rear.

The sights look like there plastic. They had to cut corners somewhere and you can always change them to steel. Looks like melonite and plastic sights are about it. I like my SD9 with the dark finish and steel night sights. I would buy a ve but I would change the sights and yes I can live with the stainless finish. I still love this gun and I am glad they brought them back. They should still have the standard SD as another choice. The trigger on my gun is very smooth and about 7 lbs which is really ideal for a defensive pistol.

If they dropped plastic in id pass on the SDVE, I love the stell sights on my SD40 it gives it puts it not only on par with a glock but one step above. If they ditched the steel sights it would explain the price drop.

If the sights are lined up with the barrel then what difference does it make if they are made of steel, plastic, gold, or unobtainium? I'm not being naive, night sights do make a big difference and steel sights look nicer, but c'mon, you're not going to shoot any straighter with steel or worse with plastic. Having said that, I once saw sight dots replaced with diamonds on TV! Now that will shoot a hole in your bank account!

Come on now are you really trying to say there is no difference between plastic and steel? Plastic is cheap and breaks ihad to replace the front sight on ny sigma after it broke off. If you use your guns other than a range trip every few months or so it matters a lot.

Even though the SD might cost more (if the SDVE comes with plastic) its a far better value when you consider the sights and finish.

Since I almost never leave the original sights on a gun plastic v. steel doesn't mean much to me. But I have seen some Sigma's with plastic sights that have been to hell and back by way of SHTFville and their sights were still fully functional. Beat to ****, scratched up and chunks missing, but still fully functional. Ditto that with the 908, 457, 910 series.

I just dont see the value of the SDVE being greater than the SD which already comes with solid sights the front being night plus the finish really puts it over the top for me at least. Id say bone stock the SD actually beats a Glock as far as value.

Personally i like more metal than plastic on my guns

NO same as the M&P but the rear sight is diff (all steel)last year's they used the M&P, this year the rear sight dont have the M&P markings or a set screw

Glocks have plastic sights. I've never seen nor heard of these failing. Personally, is see no down side with plastic sights. If I was going to get bent over plastic it would be when they start make pistol frames out of it. Oh wait!
