Welcome to the Forum

The AAA serial number prefix began in 1980 and finished 1n 1981

Unfortunately we do not have a exact point at which the prefix was split

So 1980/81 is as close as e are going to get

A factory historical letter will tell you on what date the revolver shipped and to whom it was shipped to but there is a charge for that service

Congratulations on your 586 NO Dash. Yes I agree with Colt SAA. Triple AAA prefix puts you at 1980-1981. I have a 686 with a AAB prefix and it was shipped in August of 1981. Yours probably shipped in late 1980 or the first half of 1981. Historical Letter will confirm the ship date.

I have AAA1195 and the good Dr. Jinks says it shipped in September 1981. In theory yours would have shipped after that but first in wasn't always first out.

Welcome to the Forum, Ole Craw! You've got a nice first year Model 586. As stated above, the triple-alphanumeric s/n's began with AAA and the L-frame Model 586/686 revolvers. There was a S&W factory recall on those early models, which I believe will still be honored if you're concerned and would like to send it back to S&W (the M stamp indicates the mod was performed). But of course contact Customer Service before taking action. BTW: you didn't mention the bbl length, or post any pics. We like pics.
Congratulations and enjoy!

Ole Craw, Very nice AAA 586 4 inch.

22 Hi Power, that's SO Odd that your AAA 586 with a serial number that low was shipped a month AFTER my AAB 686. I bet yours with that low of a serial number AAA gun was definitely manufactured in 1980. Like you said "First In Last Out."

Just my Opinion

Welcome to the forum!
Serial numbers are funny things. My late father bought his no dash 686 in Sept. 1981, AAB prefix. Since I have the receipt in the gun’s box and know where he bought it I haven’t lettered it.
