The muzzle flip just seems large due to the slow motion. It really doesn't move that far off line.

His thumb is in the right place. It just hooks out a little more than the average person's thumb. I would counsel him to take his finger off the trigger guard, but it works for some people. If he's hitting the target nothing else matters.
 
What I notice is the casings on a majority of shots seems to be ejecting fairly straight back. It is not the camera angle, as look at the ejection in relation to the slide orientation. Mine go well to the right, not close to the direction shown in the slo-mo videos.
