Hello
I think I got a good deal today.
I picked up a great little S/W 36 with a pinned barrel.
Looks like it has not been shot much at all.
It didnt have any grips on it at all.
What kind should I look for?
It has a square grip frame but is a 2 incher. Number J3279XX
Paid $180.00
Help with a DOB?
Thanks

Your revolver likely dates from to the year of our country's Bicentennial, 1976.

The original stocks were probably the magna style, sans escutcheon diamonds, and would've been numbered with the numerical part of the serial number. So realistically you can't make the gun "right" in the sense of restoring it to the state as it came from the factory. That said, you could try to locate some magnas that fit well, and if they are from later production, they will not be numbered at all, or you could look for the J-frame square butt target stocks, which would also be unnumbered. Another option would be Jay Scott grips which would be right for your gun's era. These came if faux pearl (black & white), faux ivory, and faux stag (see a theme here?) and they can dress up an otherwise nondescript gun.

put some crimson trace laser grips on it.
with a steady hold and from the hip you can do bullseyes all day long at 15 yards and more, depending on lighting.
i love mine!! :)

Thanks for the reply.
Glad to know DOB. 1976
I think I might look for some of the diamonds to make it correct.
Thanks for the info.

I think you misunderstood my post, non diamonds would be right on that gun. The diamond stocks were phased out almost a decade earlier.

Thanks Goony
I did mis understand the diamond post.
I think I found a set of the Jay Scott grips that are of the pearl type.
Think for now I will use them. The guy said they are new in the box.
COuld you tell me what year they discontinued the diamond one as they are on my mod.53?
Thanks again for your time and help.

You got screaming deal on your 36. Went to a show last saturday and there was not one used 36 below $350. I bought mine when Louisiana started their concealed carry license program. Like me its a little older with some blueing loss at the muzzle from carrying in my jeans. Frank

My 36 and 289

Thanks Frank
A local shop took a few police trade in S/W awhile back that had been stored for several years .
In the move to the new Station they found a locker full of old S/W.
They had quite a few 36 3,4,5,screw for various prices and several of the 28 including a few S framed guns .
These were marked at a great price.
I bought a 28-2 like new and made a 289 5 incher out of it.
Got a five inch 44 mag full lug barrel and cylinder from Sharps and now have a great shooting 44 mag
Once in a lifetime at the right place at the right time.

The diamond type stocks were phased out in the 1967-68 time frame. If a set of S&W magna stocks are original to a particular gun, they will normally have the matching numerical component of the serial number stamped into the inside of the right side panel.
