I have come across S&W Model 10-4 4" barrel in excellent condition no box, for 659.95 price. My question is the following. Is this a fair price, and what vintage is it?

According to the SCSW the -4 should be a 1962 vintage. The value is pretty "Iffy" depending on condition and your location. If it helps any, last year I bought a 4" no dash for $415 and a 2" -7 for $369. So I would say that $659 is way to high unless it's like new with box and all the goodies. But then, you are in the land of ivory towers.

Cutterman75, welcome to the forum. :)

$660 for a Model 10-4 alone, even in excellent condition, is too much.

Is that the lowest you could haggle the seller down to, or the seller's opening ask?

Not sure if this helps much but there is a 10-5 at my LGS for $695. It is in the box and 100% condition.

Isn't the 10-4 one of the less common Model 10's?

This was discussed recently here, and it is. At that price, however...

Although the -4 series not usually seen in great numbers, the price is far too high.

Even with the box and paperwork it's actual value would be around $500 max.

Excellent condition heavy barrel 10's are out there at fair prices. And with thousands of them produced you will find one.

The high $600 range prices are what the Blue Book quotes. I think if you search for completed auctions on GA, you'll find they are going for less than that.

You are correct and it is a standard barrel gun. I found one 7 or 8 years ago for $300 and sold it here on this forum for $1100. To an M&P collector trying to fill a niche they are very desirable. Supposedly they only made them for a few weeks, a month or so, or a few months, no one knows for sure, but there are darn few of them out there. I've only seen mine and two others ever appear on this forum in 12 years. Check your SCofSW. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
10-5s on the other hand are a dime a dozen by comparison.
