Smith Wesson Model 19 Classic ?

When I first got mine, that was the only thing I didn't like about it. Before long though I realized I didn't even notice it anymore.

Mine fits all the K-frame holsters I've got just fine. No problem.

Thanks. I guess once you get it you and shoot it you don't even notice the extra quarter inch. Although I still find it silly that Smith Wesson did that...

The extra 1/4" was to fulfill the law for export into Canada. Ruger does the same thing. I have a Model 69 44 which the locking and barrel system on the 19 originated with and after 5 years of ownership and regular shooting it is the most accurate 44 I own. Including a Pre 29 5". I know Smith and Wesson heresy but it is true.

Interesting. But why did S&W feel compelled to do it for that firearm and not their other 4 inch revolvers ?

I believe there is a 19-2 for sale right now, on the forum. It is described as a safe queen. Nice original diamond targets. However, it is marked as all sales final. There are not enough pics to get me interested in " all sales final". I would need to see the forcing cone for cracks, recoil shield, and frame with grips removed. But It could be a nice deal

Hate to say it but the new 66s and 19s out perform the old models.

Picked my 19 classic up today.
Finish looks good. Good solid lock up with that new mid-lock.
They cheaped out, no white outline rear, and no target hammer. Double action is rough, but its new. Not sure on grips. Nicely done but will need to see if their functional. VZ has a sale through the weekend. Round butt narrows choices.
Will get it out monday.

Anyone know if they have a target hammer that will fit it?

Pull off the side plate and spray out the internals and lube, it will break in quickly, the mim parts smooth out great. My new model 66 2.75 has the best, smoothest double action in my collection and shoots lights out. I was hitting a 2 inch dot at 50 yards with Hornady Critical Defense 357, 125gr FTX single action kneeling with my arms supported on a shooting shelf with my bifocals about 1/2 the time. Blowing out dots double action at 7 yards. Carries great and out shoots my 1911s on the B silhouettes.

Another thing to check for with the side plate off is burrs. MIM parts have none, but the inside of the gun is still machined and I found (and removed) a large burr on the inside of a 617.

I don't understand the old vs new or SW vs ruger debate, etc

Get both!

Want a 19? Get a new one..shoot the hell out of it while you are waiting for an old one to show up.

Then write to SW and thank them for still making amazing revolvers.

I see the new Classic 19 has a 4.25 inch barrel. But didn't the original have a 4 inch ?

Yeah, but Canada's nanny state government banned all barrels below 4.2 inches. So to sell up there, US makers lengthened barrels by .2 inches. This is crime supposedly prevented.

I'm sure their misguided goal was to ban most police type revolvers. And it did, the older ones. This was a real disservice to honest Canadian gun owners. Australians got messed over even worse.

You may or may not need a new holster for these 4.2 inch barrels. Depends on how much leeway the holster makers allowed when making leather for four-inch guns.

I hadn't ever seen one in person, and saw one of the Model 19 classics at at a gun show yesterday. I'm sure mechanically they're fine, I have nothing against the new revolvers, but I have to say the bluing was atrocious, truly *****, and I wouldn't want one for that reason alone.

The blueing on mine is perfect.
I did get a 29-10 that was very blotchy and I didn't see it until I was home.
They re-did it and it was perfect. I think they touched up the action a little as well. Must have been a good day for them.

The bluing on the new S&W guns is not all that great. It is more of a black gun and not much luster but other than that they are decent. Not a fan of the newer wood grips. They feel more like plastic than wood even though they are wood.
