The recent "American Rifleman" review of the new Combat Magnum shows good velocity and excellent accuracy. I think that demonstrates (in a one-sample way!) that the two-piece barrel works.
No, the "Classic" models have the old style thumbpiece.
Dan Wesson proved the accuracy potential of the tensioned barrel system many decades ago.The recent "American Rifleman" review of the new Combat Magnum shows good velocity and excellent accuracy. I think that demonstrates (in a one-sample way!) that the two-piece barrel works.
The 4.25" will comply with Canada and some state laws.
I was good with all the differences with the new Classic version until I saw the barrel is a quarter inch longer. Is that extra .25 inches noticable ?

When I first got mine, that was the only thing I didn't like about it. Before long though I realized I didn't even notice it anymore.
Mine fits all the K-frame holsters I've got just fine. No problem.
The extra 1/4" was to fulfill the law for export into Canada. Ruger does the same thing. I have a Model 69 44 which the locking and barrel system on the 19 originated with and after 5 years of ownership and regular shooting it is the most accurate 44 I own. Including a Pre 29 5". I know Smith and Wesson heresy but it is true.
Pull off the side plate and spray out the internals and lube, it will break in quickly, the mim parts smooth out great. My new model 66 2.75 has the best, smoothest double action in my collection and shoots lights out. I was hitting a 2 inch dot at 50 yards with Hornady Critical Defense 357, 125gr FTX single action kneeling with my arms supported on a shooting shelf with my bifocals about 1/2 the time. Blowing out dots double action at 7 yards. Carries great and out shoots my 1911s on the B silhouettes.
