Smith Wesson Model 19 Classic ?

I don't understand the old vs new or SW vs ruger debate, etc

Get both!

Want a 19? Get a new one..shoot the hell out of it while you are waiting for an old one to show up.

Then write to SW and thank them for still making amazing revolvers.

I see the new Classic 19 has a 4.25 inch barrel. But didn't the original have a 4 inch ?

Yeah, but Canada's nanny state government banned all barrels below 4.2 inches. So to sell up there, US makers lengthened barrels by .2 inches. This is crime supposedly prevented.

I'm sure their misguided goal was to ban most police type revolvers. And it did, the older ones. This was a real disservice to honest Canadian gun owners. Australians got messed over even worse.

You may or may not need a new holster for these 4.2 inch barrels. Depends on how much leeway the holster makers allowed when making leather for four-inch guns.

I hadn't ever seen one in person, and saw one of the Model 19 classics at at a gun show yesterday. I'm sure mechanically they're fine, I have nothing against the new revolvers, but I have to say the bluing was atrocious, truly *****, and I wouldn't want one for that reason alone.

The blueing on mine is perfect.
I did get a 29-10 that was very blotchy and I didn't see it until I was home.
They re-did it and it was perfect. I think they touched up the action a little as well. Must have been a good day for them.

The bluing on the new S&W guns is not all that great. It is more of a black gun and not much luster but other than that they are decent. Not a fan of the newer wood grips. They feel more like plastic than wood even though they are wood.
