Smith & Wesson Model 22A

Have any Model 22a owners been having similar problems as I have? My 22a has problem with failure to eject pinching the shell before it ejects...light hits that fail to fire....shell fires and partially retracts out of chamber and stops. The slide is alsomaking deep grooves in the frame as it moves.... I have never seen a gun do that. When contacting S&W they say this wont hurt anything they can correct the problem so it doesnt do it anymore but you will still have the groves. Why is it acceptable for the slide to contact the frame and groove it. Why hasnt this been fixed in design and manufacturing? It shouldnt do that. if the slide needs to ride that much on the frame it should be a stronger metal that is s/s as the slide is. My 22a is at the facory for repairs and even when telling more then 2 customer service about my displeasure about the functioning and the grooves it sounds like the factory told cust service that it will be corrected but the grooves wont be to noticeable. I dont want any grooves. This pistol jams way more then I think it should and customer service says try cci shells. I think it should be able to feed more types of rounds and not so finicky. I have seen on other forums that these problems are very common with the 22a and very similar to the problems of the model 2206 which was discontinued. Have heard from dealers that smith & wesson is slipping with quality. I may replace my 22a if they return it with grooves on the frame and still wont function. It jammed numerous time in a bulls eye pistol league.

Do you have the Talo edition? Mine is and no problems such as you are experiencing. Not quite sure where the slide is putting grooves in the frame. Remember as the gun is broken in there will be some marks as the moving parts settle in. Of course if you are getting a lot of failures to eject, then that should be addressed by the factory.

I purchased my 22A in December 2010. The first few times at the range it seemed fine. The last couple of times it has had serious FTE issues. I have cleaned and lubed it to no avail. I will be contacting Smith & Wesson soon.

I had all of the same problems same advise from S&W techs Bought a Ruger target mod no problems it will eat anything.

Same thing, bought the 22a , and baretta neos, both shot 6" high and to the left 6" neos had the worst trigger. Sold em. bought ruger SS targets mark II & III, less than a 100.00 more ea. eat anything, drive tacks, 3x the quality. You get what you pay for.

to the OP, yes to everything you said. send it to S&W see if it gets any better. if not sell it and get a ruger.

My 22a is still at s&w. The factory said they cant give me a new frame until cust serviceservice approves it.....whats the frame cost them to make maybe....5 bucks come on. It shouldnt be gouging the frame in the first place. This is not a fluke problem every 22a ive seen fire at the range has the same problems and this model has had problems for some time and they havent corrected the design yet? I will most likely be getting a ruger if they send it back and i is still grooved and malfunctions.

I have a two year old standard 22a with about 5000 rounds through it and is been great....giving it to my brother in law for his birthday next week. No unusual wear on it anywhere and only a handful of feed failures. Shooting mostly Blazer round nose lead and various cci copper jacketed.

Sarlaud, I'm about to buy the Talo edition...what do think?

I didnt have good luck with mine and not sure what a talo version is. I have returned mine to factory and getting refund. The slide on mine gouged up my frame and am told this normal for the 22a. If i were you i would gi withhm ruger

I looked up talo edition....looks like all they did was some cosmetics. That doesnt chsnge the mechanics of the gun. I wouldnt do it. A nice ruger mark iii or ii is the way to go. A used ruger would out live the talo and quality is much better.

Yea...it's just cosmetics. I've could go mark III hunter but it seems they're a bitch to field strip. The 22a is simple.

I would still go ruger. follow instructions and keep doing the strip. it will get better. the 22a may be easier but no where near the quality. most anyone will tell you ruger or buckmark. baretta good to. your ultimate choice i know i am getting ruger. for the little more in price is well worth it. i try to buy only quality products and got 22a because of reputation of s&w but this is not a quality firearm in my opinion.

in my opinion people are willing to pay for quality and will regret a cheaper but lesser quality purchase

I own two Ruger Mark III's in addition to the 22a-1 that I got a couple of weeks ago. On the Ruger site you will get postings complaining about the Ruger quality. Comparing the two I see no difference in quality and I agree the Talo edition is mostly if not all cosmetic, but I like the wooden grips that comes with the Talo edition.

With the Ruger you can safely dry fire, but not so with the S&W. So far no problems with either my Rugers or the 22a-1, but then at the next range session that I suppose could change.

I've only put ~2ooo rounds in mine. No issues yet. I'm actually on the brink about whether or not to buy another for my son.

I am buying a ruger mark ii government model when i get my money back. I am thinking of selling my sigma to and get a ruger p95. I am impressed with ruger quality and them building a quality product for reasonable price.
