I like my 3" 629, and I know guys who have 3" 29s, but IMHO, the laser etching "BOUNTY HUNTER" seems kinda tacky. YMMV John

I agree with John.

When I first saw the laser etching it looked to me to be the efforts of some "West Coast Custom - Pimp My Smith" gunshop.

Odd way to tart up an otherwise fine firearm.

And there is no way I would use a gun called "The Bounty Hunter" for self defense. I could see a jury reading all kinds of stuff into that name.

That said, I have a 3" 629 Backpacker and love it.

I have one on order right now as I type. The whole idea of that it's not a regular S&W catalog item is what was the final deciding factor. As soon as I told a buddy of mine that it was not a regular item even he said "get it!".
As for what a jury would say, I don't think thats an issue as long as you didn't drag the bad guy back inside your house!

i have a 3" 629, and i think they are pretty much the same gun. i agree about the jury thing not being a valid reason.

I have a 4" would love to get a 3" but ......that sounds like a nice gun but "Bounty Hunter" I just don't know.

So...how is it? I have loved my Backpacker and others, but really like the 3" Carbon Steel look. I think the price seems right. How was the service and delivery?

I have no idea why Bounty Hunter would have anything to do with the legitimacy of a shoot. I mean, it is not like that is what you are doing. It is a Model designation Like "backpacker" What if they try to say backpackers are meant to shoot people in the backpack? kinda silly, IMHO Do Massad or others with expert experience want to comment?

There is alot of paranoia being expressed on this and other sites as to liability and gun ownership. A good shoot is a good shot, regardless of what is inscribed on your gun. For Pete's sake, I have read of people not doing action jobs, polishing external gun parts, even replacing grips because of fear that some overzealous prosecutor might use it against them. The big one is the IL which seems to have a liability mystique all its own. If they want to fry you for a shoot, they will try no matter what you carry. If I need to shoot to defend my life, the least of my problems will be in court. Any good defense attorney will be able to punch holes (no pun intended) in any prosecution attempt to hang you for what kind of gun was used.

My sense is that the aversion to the laser engraving just means that folks like me will have a chance to own a brand-new 3" 629 for well under $600...

Like the gun but hate the name. In this day and age, there is no reason to give a name like that to a gun. It's like branding the gun a Rambo Special, or making the Death Wish signature series line. Just give me a simple numerical model number (anything other than 666).
