Awhile back I made a deal with a guy on a Model 15. Now, I'm Mr. Magoo when it comes to close up and I forgot my "cheaters". The gun looked good. The guy was an experienced shooter, competition and whatnot. I did a quick and lazy check of it and all seemed good. I was kinda pressed for time and couldn't see well, so the next part of the story is on me. I bought the gun, for a good price, and took it home. Put some stags on it and stored it away.
Recently, I have needed to sell some of my accumulation to raise cash. I decided to consign the 15 with a friend who owns a LGS. Left it with him and later that day he calls and says he can't sell it. It has push off. Then the penny drops. Competition. I tell Terry I'll be in to pick it up. Go to get it and yes it pushes off. With my cheaters I can see that the strain screw has been replaced with an allen head screw. Yep, it's been worked on. But how much?
I take it home and immediately order 2 new strain screws from Numrich plus a new factory mainspring. Maybe that's all that was messed with and let's get it back to stock. Parts come in but don't fix the problem. Tear it all the way down.
Did I mention I am Mr. Magoo? Well with my highest magnifier I notice that there appears to have been some stoning of the parts. Not good. OK back to Numrich. What gets replaced? Rebound slide spring? Check. Hammer and trigger? Little more than I want to spend right now. But, in talking to my friend, he has some hammers and triggers he'll send me. Whatever I don't put in the gun I send back. He sends me one stripped trigger and one full assembly and two stripped hammers and one full assembly.
All the parts are here, so I assemble the gun with the assemblies and new stock parts and BINGO! No push off, everything works as it should. Now I just don't want to sell the gun.
PSA: Get your eyes checked regularly. Do not rush a firearms inspection. And competition shooters always mod their guns.
Friendship: The friend in question I met on this site. He is Curt Harlow, grip maker extraordinaire. Curt, you are a treasure. And a true friend. I am both proud an humbled to call you friend.
