Smiths in 45 Colt Ctg The Ultimate 25 and 625 discussion.Edited June 2014

I bought my Model 25 new in I think around 1980? I wanted the long barrel as I was shooting handgun silhouette and I thought the .45 Colt was a great cartridge with good knockdown power for rams. I shot it a lot in matches, and won my fair share with this 25. I also shot it in defensive pistol matches at our club, and to the 1911 guys surprise it beat them pretty regularly until they handicapped me with less reload time to "make things fairer".
Still one of my favorite S&W pistols to shoot with my 185SWC and 200 SWC bullets!

I just discovered this thread today! Lots of good information.

I have a Model 625-9 Mountain Gun, 4" tapered barrel, that I bought new in January of 2006 to celebrate the break-up with a nightmare of a woman! I wanted a 45 Long Colt, but had to settle for a 45 Colt! :D:p;)

This revolver has never fired a factory loaded cartridge since I have owned it. I shoot cast bullets of various weights.

It came with rubber grips, but I later replaced them with Eagle rosewood "Coke" repros (no medallion).

I haven't shot it for close to 10 years, and I was even thinking about selling it. Now, after reading this thread, I want to get it to the range soon.

I have a 25-9 that I bought about 35 years ago for $350. TH & TT. No box, tools or original grips but had these beautiful Bear Hug grips which I later found were collectible in their own right. It’s my only .45 Colt. If I hand loaded it would get shot a lot more than it has. Very accurate.

Since this thread has been revived, and has moved to include .45 ACP revolvers and single actions, I'll post again. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures handy.

My 1st centerfire revolver was an Old Model .45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk with the 4 5/8" barrel. My 1st S&W was a reblued 1917 that I bought when I was a reserve deputy earning college credits via an internship. I had started with an Essex framed 1911, but the chief deputy always gave me a bit of the side-eye when he saw. It MIGHT have been because of the .45 caliber hole in the top of his desk that another young deputy put there with a 1911.

My next .45 Colt was a rechambered .455 2nd Model S&W. After trading this .45 and a '97 Winchester for a 1953 F100, I didn't acquire another .45 revolver until I bought my 4" blue M25-5. Later, I bought another Ruger; this time it was a New Model BH, 4 5/8" with the ACP cylinder. Later, I found a 5 1/2" Great Western and a Webley & Scott 4" MKV that had been cut for .45 ACP in clips/.45 AutoRim.

My stepson bought a 5" M625 and a year or so later I bought it from him. It was a mite heavy for uniformed duty use and I tried to find a Mountain Gun barrel to swap out. This was before the internet was a thing and the closest I could get was a 3" full lug barrel. I installed it and that was what I was carrying when I retired from the police department in 2001.

I was able to have a bit more gun money while I was working overseas and bought two S&W 1917 stripped frames, a 7 1/2" Colt New Service in .45 Colt and two M625 Mountain Guns, one in .45 Colt and one in .45 ACP. I also bought a stainless Ruger Old Army and a .45 Colt conversion cylinder.

I have managed to hang onto the M25-5, the M625 .45 ACP Mountain Gun, one of the 1917 frames that I restored to shooting condition, the New Service, the NM Ruger, the Webley and the Ruger Old Army.

I’ve been using Rim Rock 270gr Keith style SWC’s and 250gr RN over 9.0 of Unique. Can’t complain.

Jere is my favorite 45 colt. aa model 25-5 with barrel cut to 5" from 8 3/8 and a recessed model 29 cylinder reamed to 45 colt and fitted to get a pinned and recessed 5" 45 colt

Here is a model 629-1 reamed to 45 colt and a 5" full lug barrel installed

Here is a 629-1 with a reamed cylinder cut to also fire 45 acps in clips sporting a 4" barrel

Here is a 1955 setup with a reamed 29 cylinder

Yes, I like 45 colt S&W revolvers

Pretty please, let me know when you get bored of that 5” 25, and the 4” full lug. Just spectacular.

I have several Model 25-5s but my more interesting 45 Colts are these three:

A 1917 Commercial from 1927 which was converted by the factory to a 45 Colt target in 1949.

The second is a 1950 Target in 45 Colt.

And the third is an engraved 2nd model MKII .455 converted to 45 Colt.

The 4" went down the road a year ago. The 5" may be available after my death.
In response to an earlier question I don't believe it makes a bit of difference between a 25, 29 or 625, 629 frame. I had picked up 3 629-1 all with 8 3/8 barrels for $500 a piece from separate sources over the years. I am not a 44 mag fan boy. The longer shanks on the acp barrels are easy to shorten and then cut your preferred forcing cone in. Why have a 44 barrel bored and rifled to.452 when plenty of factory 45 barrels are around
