Smolt: Let the flogging begin!

Looking forward to seeing the finished product. $90 for a Python barrel is a steal!!

I searched unsuccessfully for many years for a Smolt, and finally had one built last year by Frank Glenn in Phoenix. I used a 2 1/2" M19 as the base gun... the full length rear sight on the snubbies matches up properly to the Colt barrel.

Here's mine:

Rodan, that’s a beautiful specimen! Frank is the Python man!
I have a several 2.5 19/66 I could choose from, but decided on the L frame because it’s the same size as the Python and I have one that’s already polished. :)

Smith had a good idea with the 586/686 concept, but they insisted on using the same bore dimensions as those on their other 38/357 guns... the twist was too slow for max accuracy (and generally a little oversized bore diameter!). S&W has a much better, longer lasting lockwork and cylinder to frame lockup, than Colt therefore the cottage industry of making Smolts an of using custom barrels from makers such as Douglas. Smith just couldn’t quite go the last little bit to build competition guns. Oh well!

PS Slightly off topic, but Cougars built on DA Rugers with Colt Python barrels were a thing back then too. That should tell everybody something.

I am working on smolt #3 a 5" 45 colt using an anaconda barrel. Already have a 4" and 6" using K frames and model 19 cylinders

I can’t wait to see you 45 Smolt.

Got a call this afternoon from Milt at QRP Precision. Apparently, his wife’s health took a turn for the worse and he has to hold off on new work indefinitely. Now I need to find someone who can do my conversion. :(

Any ideas?

In view of the fact I have no FFL, I am not an option. I can retread your barrel. but not fit it. Plus, the channel in the under lug needs opened up as S&W ejector rods are much thicker than the ones on Colts

Your Python barrel is an older one with a 2 pin front sight, those had .562-32 to the inch threads as opposed to the one pin front sight guns which have the same .562-36 threads as L frames, But, on K frames you need.540-36 anyway.

Not many actual revolver smiths left.

Exactly, that is why I waited on the later 1 pin sight barrels. Makes it a lot easier of a job for the smith.

True for mounting them on an L frame. Not sure it would make any difference if you want to stick it on a K frame as you would need to redo the thread on either.
Anaconda barrel threads are way bigger than N frame threads

You can shorten a longer colt barrel by turning everything away and threading. I even. Set a Python barrel up for an N frame that way. Just need to make the new back shoulder where there is no void in rib. Slot in under lug needs milled out no matter what
