Smython/Smolt

Could the k19/colt be gaining again in popularity? Or was it a passing fling between the m19 and the Python?

If this thing checks out and is in good shape and I saw it for $525 I would be ALL over it.

Heck the Python Barrel itself is worth $350 to $400.

I have always wanted one of those.

Ok, Ok, I bought it, they're holding it for me. As soon as I get it, I will post pic's and see what everybody thinks.
Thank you, everyone! I appreciate the opinions.

Good - I hate suspense....here's mine....as noted in post #14. Photo's were shot last fall on the range. Over the years I have had several guy's ask "How do you like that python?" or "How do you like that 586?", depending on which end of the gun they recognized. I have shot mine from my ransom rest at 25 and 50 yds with HBWC's, it is quite accurate. Back in the 70's, the theory was that the Colt barrel would make it more accurate, improve balance, etc. Enjoy your new "hybrid".

Local fun show had a Colt Trooper MKIII with the for want of a better word sighting bar on it and while it looked nice and had a really nice trigger had a few issues that concerned me. Some beautiful smolts or smythons are some beautiful revolvers. Thanks for posting the pics. Frank

There was a discussion about these awhile back and two days later the thread went POOF. I had one built in the 70's on a 27 with a 6" barrel. If I remember right Davis in California built it for me. Foolishly a guy wanted it more than I did at the time and I sold it. STUPID STUPID STUPID.

Didn't figure it would take long to sell at that price. Nice profit, and still a decent buy for the new owner. Cool piece with that 3" barrel.

A few months ago a really nice 6 inch on a mdl. 19 sold on an auction site for about $1,500.
WOW. The one I bought was built onto a brand new model 66, didn't even have a turn ring, action is dead tight. Has a 6" Python barrel. I am feeling a lot better about paying $800, especially since California prices are always way higher than the rest of the country. I would never sell it.

I've noticed a common theme in this thread: "Had one, sold it, stupid thing to do."

Let that be a lesson!

Found an old advertising from the german gundealer Rolf B. Fischlein,
Frankfurt/Main from 1981:
Then the price for a "Smolt" (or "Smython") with Behlert rear sight was
936,- DM (Deutsche Mark), a Colt Python may be +/- 1300 DM.

The "antler stamp" as shown here http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1961-1980/465064-17-1-german-proofmarking.html in post #1 and post #5 is the sign of the Beschussamt Ulm (Proof House Ulm) Kleines Lexikon der Beschusszeichen
With the German C.I.P. Proofmarks you can date the year of the proofing (as mentioned in post #5: 72 = 1972 / post #1: 62 = 1962).

If the python barrel was installed in Germany (= after the 1. C.I.P. Proofing), there should be a "reproof", documented with
a "J" for "Instandsetzungsbeschuss" (Reproof) + the "Proof Eagle" + "Antler" + "Date") on the (underside ?) barrel.
