Snarky Responses

We have all read snarky responses to posts. They serve no purpose but to offend or demean. They actually detract from the point or argument the responder is attempting to make. Before sending the response, take a minute and read it it again carefully. See if your response is actually better without the offensive or demeaning parts. Consider your audience. The snarky responses usually reflect on the one making them rather than to whom they are directed.

There is a fine line between snark and sarcasm and I have degrees in both. I generally leave the snark on the cutting room floor as there is no profit in it and it only fosters ill will and hard feelings and folks around these parts have long memories.

I am in the Thumper Rabbit camp on this one.

I generally try and stay off the snark, but sometimes I can't help myself when certain myths get trotted out for the upteenth time. Who knew sacred cows were so tough.

Glad you started this thread Doug. I was thinking of doing something similar myself.

In one of the Revolver Forums, a new member asked about the difference between an M27 and an M29. Common knowledge to most of us, but if you don't know, you don't know.

Well, he got some responses that talk condescendingly to him, like it was a really stupid question. He answered back something to the effect "keep your sarcasm", and then someone started arguing about the definition of sarcasm. Oh brother.

A lot of new members hesitate to ask questions because they don't want to look stupid. Shouldn't they be encouraged to ask questions and learn? Or is it more important that we lord it over them how much we know and they don't?

If I were a young person, new to shooting, and excited about the journey I was about to embark on and came here to explore, ask questions and learn and read the consistent negative broad brushing about younger generations by us "Senior Citizens" I would head for the exit too.

I agree. I think the mean attitude towards new people is a good way to run them off. This is one of the best Forums on the net. I hope to do my part to keep it that way. When you've been doing something for a long time, sometimes it's easy to look down your nose at someone just getting started, but they are the ones who need help the most.

On the other hand, to me it's OK to poke the bear a little in jest when you know a long time member has a thick skin and can poke back. Life is too short to be serious all the time. As long as it's in fun and not malicious.

Everyone wants a safe space now adays. We've raised a nation of Woosies! To many snow flakes crying about thats racist and other bs. I dislike people in general so alot of times I come across as snarky. Guess what though? I don't care. They want a waaaambulance because their little feelings are hurt. Mommy that mean man hurt my feelings.

I have more respect for people that can jab back at me verbally than snow flake babies that cry because their precious little feelings were hurt.

After years of experience in this area, teaching, refereeing, being in both ends of a patrol car, and intimate public interaction at the highest and lowest levels, I can assure you that your opening statement is not true. There is most certainly such a thing as a stupid question. If you don't believe me, watch the reaction of the crowd and the instructor when somebody raises their hand right before break. What follows is almost always a stupid question, reflective of inattention or inability to internalize the material at its most basic level . . .
