First off, how do you define a snubbie? I have a M 10 and 13 with 3" barrels. Are those considered snubbies? K frame Smiths with a 2" barrel look more like a classic snubbie. I saw in the "book" that model 10's were sometimes made with a 2 1/2" barrel which I'd love to have, but I think they might be hard to come by.

The 1 7/8" looks too short aesthetically for my taste.

I think the round butt frame has a lot to do with the overall "look" of a snubbie. I like that look and it would be a better concealed carry.

Would love to hear some thoughts and maybe see some pics of classic snubbies.

Thanks, T

I don't know jack about what is a snubbie, but for me the barrel length has to take in to account the frame size.
I don't think a 3" j frame is a snubbie, but a 3" N frame 45 is.
I am probably way off base, but for me it has to do with proportion size of the barrel to the frame, rather than just the length.
I am sure somebody will be along to set me straight any minute now.

Ltlbear, I agree that proportion comes into play with a 3" J frame. It just looks right, not too long nor too short. On a K frame I think less than 3" would be a true snubbie.

I'm still looking for others to chime in with what they like to carry and what might still hit the broad side of a barn at close range!

Typically a "snubbie", or snub nose as I tend to refer to them as, is the smallest barrel length generally available in a particular model

For a 19 that would be a 2.5", for a 10, that would be a 2", for most J frames, that's gonna be a 1.85"

Now, I wouldnt call a 4" model 28 a snub, because that was the smallest you could get, but you see where I am going with this...

I don't really consider a 3" gun the classic snubbie but it's close enough that I'm not going to argue with anyone who does. I really like the 3" guns as they just look well proportioned, especially K, L and N frames. They will not pocket carry like a J frame snubbie but with a good holster they are easy to carry and conceal. MHO

Here's the newest addition to my "snubby stable."

All I'm waiting on now is my new crossdraw holster for it, which
should be here in a few weeks. After that it'll see regular carry use.

This one has been my primary carry for over a year now, which will fall back
to my night time carry gun, with the M64 getting used during the daytime and
when I'm doing things where the gun may get banged up once in a while.

Thanks Chuck!

This was one that just happened along and was scratched
& scuffed up enough that I got a good deal on it.

A little work, by hand, with Flitz and it came back as I had hoped it would.

After taking it apart and cleaning up the action I came to the conclusion that
it had been fired very little since it left the factory around 1982, or thereabouts.

Many years ago I shot in come Competition Snubnosed Matches at a few different Gun Clubs.

The rule was a revolver with a 3" barrel or less.

This was before the days of the 3" K frames.

The 2" Mod 15, the 2 1/2 Mod 19, and the 2" Python were the most popular because of the adjustable sights. However many did shoot the S&W Chief, and the 2" M10.

We shot out to 25 yards.

Ogy, what did you get in the way of a X draw?

To each their own. We're not the literary police around here.

For example; I have a brother-in-law who happens to be VERY large. What he considers a snubbie, and what I consider a snubbie, are two very different things!

I, personally, always considered LESS THEN 3" a snubbie, but now that I'm looking at the 13/65 and the smallest it comes in is a 3", well......

My "classic" snubbie, a 1982 Model 37.

I'd tell you how I got the Model 37, but then you'd just hate me.

Mike, I went with my tried & true standby, a Mernickle PS10DA.

Shown below for the J Frame.

D.M. Bullard also makes a nice crossdraw but they don't list a 2" K Frame
as a model they make holsters for so it would be considered a "custom order,"
which they aren't currently taking until they clear up their back-log.

I have the PS10DA's for J's, K's, L's & semi-auto's and they have
served me well every time.

Mernickle usually runs about 5 wk's from order to when you get the holster.
Bullard takes about 4-5 months, or so.

I picked this up about four weeks ago now. It is a 64-2, with a 2" barrel. I have a 442-2 No Lock, that usually rides in my pocket, and have always wanted a k-frame snub. I am very happy with this 64-2!

Cheers,

Rick

A snubby is what I can carry in my front right pants pocket. J frame, k frame 2" barrel work. Others are nice but require a holster.

I would love to have 686 with the shorter barrel just because I enjoy the looks and balance. It would never fit in a pocket...

I did a lot of PPC matches back in the day and we did a "snub nose class" up to 25 yards. Our rules called a snuby up to 2 1/2'', which made the 19 the popular gun for the class. I had a nice compact 36 and 60 for carry, but did pick up a 15 2'' just for shooting that class.

IMHO the classic snubby the S&W Model 15 with a 2" barrel, this is a 15-3 with some cut down grips I had in the junk drawer. Pretty nice :)

These two are hard to beat also, a Model 36-9 and oops how'd that Ruger get in there.
