So, I'm thinking it might be time for me to finally bite the bullet and get an AR...

As much as the riotous segments hate those things they compulsively try to steal them as in the case of the guy fighting dumpster fires and graffiti. Then they sweep the area in open court.

A friend bought a Bushmaster(pre Rem) Varminter. Never shot it. Offered it to me for 500 dollars with a 4 1/2 X 14 Nikon on it. It shoots almost as well as my 700 bolt gun...

Sounds like you've been having fun!

Had two Mini-30's in the past and they were fun, but I got an Olympic Arms .223 chambered fluted Stainless Ultra Match barrel for my AR and it was more accurate than my 700 bolt gun.

Of course I sold that gun because I am an idiot, but I still like AR's better because they can be easily made back into tack-drivers if desired.

I've been reloading .223 until my supplies run out and then I'll buy some more remanufactured ammo from Freedom Munitions because it's way easier than reloading on my neanderthal single stage press set-up. :o

Hey great idea you guys, I think I'll write my own obituary too:

BRL40 kicked the bucket long before Forte Smitten Wesson ever got around to giving us a flippin' range report.

Ferkrissakes have you even fired that thing yet?

Nope, unfortunately I've had an awful lot of personal stuff going on ever since I got the rifle and have been too preoccupied dealing with the mess to do anything else.

Besides, I'm between ranges at this time because the one that I was a member of for years adopted a host of fudd rules which essentially render shooting an AR there practically impossible, so not only do I have to sort out a lot of things in my life before I can shoot, but then I have to find a new range that isn't governed by fudds who basically render shooting anything but a 6-shot revolver an exercise in tedium.

Living in the communist state of Kommifornia, I have held off buying an AR platform rifle due to the restrictions placed on it in this state. I have great hopes that soon the "assault rifle" ban will be ruled unconstitutional, but in the meantime I have acquired a Ruger Mini 14 which serves a similar purpose and "isn't Scary" to the leftists here. I have selected my requisite options for when I can purchase what I want however.

Since my last 'water craft' was a 12' w/a 6 h.p. Evinrude, I only needed this one:

If I were in your shoes, then I too would also sooner opt for a Ruger Mini-14. California Compliant ARs are a hideous abomination. The mere sight of one honestly fills me with disgust.

AR15/AR10

After 29 years in the Army, I thought I would never have a AR. I now have six, I only shoot paper. I found it enjoyable to build my own lowers, but I did build one upper. I reload all of my rounds, another hobby that has blossomed. If you want a AR get one or two.

Oh, you are forgiven, hey at least you were able to obtain one so give us a report when you can. :)

Yep, we here in WA. used to be able to go to a gun show and buy and sell to each other without restrictions, as long as we were law abiding citizens.

Then I think bunch of your residents moved up here for the high-tech. jobs and now I don't think a FFL will even sell me a AR trigger spring.

They might be highly intelligent, scholastically educated individuals, but they are dumb as snot when it comes to protecting all of our 2A rights from government intrusion.

That's why I went out and bought my most recent AR and some spare parts, before all this garbage took place, and that's why I'm now stocking up on ammo before the idiots manage to vote away our ability to purchase that stuff too.

...and so it goes...

Nice rifle DRYHEAT.

I had a couple several years ago, Colts back in the 70's early 80's. Both got stolen. I liked the5.56 caliber and had shot a few deer with them. although @ short range and neck shots. I wanted another but AR's were taboo by then on a So I decided on a mini-14.
A few yrs ago my son gave me a stripped lower with all the parts for Christmas. Then a stripped upper for my birthday, early January. Built it up to include Shilen heavy SS barrel in 6.5 grendel (already had a 223 mini), CMC single stage trigger and Hogue free floating fore. Rest of the parts were off the shelf stuff.
A couple years later I ran across a Radical Arms complete upper in 5.56 for a price I couldn't pass up. My plan was to just change out the uppers when I wanted to. But now I've got a hankerin to build another lower for the 223. I may do that soon!
OP, everyone needs at least one AR in the caliber of his choice. So many to choose from!

A lot of people like to point out that (historically) "AR" stands for Armalite Rifle - NOT Assault Rifle.

I like to think of "AR" as standing for "AMERICA'S Rifle" :)

I also don’t “feel the need.” That being said I have one (at least one) I don’t use it a whole lot. Then again, I don’t use my fire extinguisher a whole lot … or all of the 250 horses under the hood of my Crown Vic. The AR has function all over the place. I’d suggest going my route: buy or build a plain Jane version, pref. in a F2F. After you get the hang of it THEN start looking for your preferred version on it. Buy the preferred version then.

I had the same hesitation as OP, and to be honest I still do. I am in education and I know how my colleagues would view that, even if I think they are wrong. I also know my wife would not be thrilled about it, so I am not sure it is worth the headache. After all, you cannot defend your family if they are not there to defend. Even so, I will try to convince her we need it for home defense because I do think we should have one. She could use that easier than my Mossberg 500 if she ever absolutely had to use one.

The "ANTI-GUN" people have been targeting ALL FIREARMS since the country was established. If you don't have a few AR's laying around, that's just anti-American dude.

Maybe it would be good to have a constitution reading party with the wife?? Sounds like she's ignorant of the Bill of Rights and firearms in general. Like most woman, they're very emotional animals and logic generally escapes them.

I bought one a few years ago, a Geissele Super Duty, and installed a 1-5 optic. It's my favorite rifle.
