So, I'm thinking it might be time for me to finally bite the bullet and get an AR...

When posters put down Colts at every opportunity, I believe they are Colt haters. If you disagree that's OK. I own Colts, Smiths and others. I just get tired of seeing posters denigrate them all the time. The Colt 6920 is the bench mark for AR;s. Some brands are better and some worse. YMMV

I don’t hate Colt firearms.

I brought a new Holy Grail SAA. Paid a lot of money for it. It was a beautiful gun gun out of the box. The nickel finish blew off of the front of the cylinder when I shot the first box of 50 cartridges. So I sent the cylinder back to be refinished. Then the nickel finish on the frame peeled off so I had to send it back.

I could not get it to shoot good groups. I even had Bob Munden shoot it. However a lot of experimentation I discovered the cylinder throats where .457”+. I sent it back to the factory and Colt refused to replace it. Instead I got a note saying the gun was “within factory specs” and I should just enjoy owning a “collectable firearm”.

So Colt AR’s are better that everyone else’s yet they can’t win any military contracts. Screw me once shame on you. Screw me twice shame on me.

There wasn't any mention about piston rifles. I have both, piston and direct impingment, you might want to weigh the pros and cons between the two. I like both systems but with the piston version you don't have a buffer tube which means more versatility(IMO).

The little shop in the Palmetto state is running a sale on uppers and lowers now, less than $350.00. It would need a magazine and some sort of sights.

A friend convinced me to go in with him on a 5D Tactical jig & I built way too many AR's, I find the standard .223/5.56 are very easy to build and usually work the very first time I take them to the range-- Then I started building the AR-9,AR-10, AR-45 and they need more tweaking to make them work right. Now I have way too many AR's in every caliber I like

Well, my offer received a counter-offer which I accepted, but now I've hit a snag... The site I ordered from doesn't have my FFL on file and neither the site's customer support nor my FFL are open until Monday, so now I have to wait...

My last AR was issued in the Dark Ages, but I've fired a (ahem)-ton of M4s since 2013. It happens that I had in May occasion to function-test and get exemplar brass from several of an AK variant in 7.62x39. I enjoyed the round, but not the rifles, so I think I need a Colt CR6762, essentially an M4 in 7.62x39. Familiar rifle with just enough 'juice' for small-to-medium deer. They come with a 30-round mag, but hunting 5-rounders are readily available.

Alright, so now that the order has been placed, here's some information on the rifle that I purchased...

M&P;(R)15X | Smith & Wesson

Based on what I've been able to gather, the M&P15X was in production from 2007 up until 2019. It was originally Smith & Wesson's premium option in the M&P15 line, with a hefty MSRP of $1,379.00! Fortunately, it only cost me $608 after tax/fee/S&H, which seems fair to me considering that it's a police trade-in which most likely spent most of its life inside of a police cruiser. I'm unsure of where my particular example came from, but I was able to find two articles listing the adoption of the M&P15X, one was the Navada Department of Public Safety and the other was possibly — get this — The National Aeronautics and Space Association! Yeah, apparently NASA was considering adoption of the M&P15X for the security force at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center in Hancock Mississippi. However, I could find no confirmation of whether or not they actually adopted it, so of the two of them, it most likely came from the NDPS, but an interesting tidbit of information nonetheless.

Based on the specs, it appears that the M&P15X was basically Smith & Wesson's offering for a high-end M4 Carbine/LE6920 style of tactical rifle. Alas, the M&P15X seems to have been a model which just didn't attract the same kind of attention that the standard M&P15 or the budget-priced Sport models did, so attempts to find any detailed reviews, testing, or even range reports on the rifle were ultimately fruitless. Yes, this rifle, despite being in production for over a decade, just doesn't seem to have been anywhere near as popular as their less expensive models were. Nevertheless, I consider myself rather fortunate to have stumbled upon a sale for such a high-end rifle at such a low price, and I can't wait to get my claws on it!

The American government says you don't need an AR-15.

Get two.

it isn't the American government. The feds don't care since the AWB timed out, but some of the state governments do.

So depending on where you live you need either none or several.

My buddy who I used to shoot with a lot has an M&P Sport. I think the current model is the Sport II but IDKU.

I can't find a single thing wrong with it. ;)

Several major manufacturers build a decent <1K AR.

Early 1970s Colt SP-1.

It's fine for what it is. I've owned and used it since the late 1980s. It was mostly acquired as a stand-in for a US small arms collection. It's probably my least favorite rifle on the place. I don't admire anything about it, its design, its ergonomics, its appearance, or its cartridge.

It's ok for fun plinking out to 200 yards. So are a lot of other rifles.

My most recent AR .22. The start of a Solo Blaster. This is how it was set up for a 2gun ZSA shoot that I used it in two months ago. Cheeked it and used it for my rifle.

Love my MP Sport2, but after buying a Sig Tread 716, I'd definitely buy the Sig 400 Tread for the little extra money it is. The Ruger, Springfield, Colt and Bushmasters are also good value AR's.

When I go, I don’t care what happens. You don’t get to write your own obituary . . .

Sure you can. Here's mine.

Lihpster passed away yesterday. He was old enough to know better. His childhood was filled with bawling, drooling and incontinence, much like his adulthood. Survivors include 3 small cacti and Keith Richards. Services will be held in a van down by the river.

Hey great idea you guys, I think I'll write my own obituary too:

BRL40 kicked the bucket long before Forte Smitten Wesson ever got around to giving us a flippin' range report.

Ferkrissakes have you even fired that thing yet?

I'm another of those shooters who's just sorta 'meh' on AR's..... - Not a single thing against them - I mainly ended up with my first because of dissatisfaction with a total of three (3) Ruger Mini-14's whose accuracy was approximately "minute of paint bucket".

Have a fairly basic Delton that came with a 20" hvy. barrel with a match chamber. Grew tired of that, easily sold the upper and put a 16" Bushmaster upper on it. Kept the M2 style stock because it just works n the woods if I want to hunt with it. A good quality Burris low-power variable scope, Magpul pistol grip and fore end, completes what is a great shooting little rifle. Far out-performs the Mini-14's I used to own.

The other is a SIG PM400 with brace. Got it while working at an LGS when they had first come out, complete with the ATF laminated letter stating that the firearm was a pistol and completely approved.
It wears an EoTech red-dot and is a fun shooter.
I also got a CMMG .22 LR conversion kit for it that works perfect. My only suppressor is for .22 RF and it threads right on the SIG. With subsonic .22 LR, you hear just the bolt moving and bullets striking cardboard.

Yea, same here, me and a shooting buddy were at a gunshop one day when he asked my opinion on AR's, seeings as how I recently had gotten out of the Air Force and was familiar with them.

I told him that I didn't think much of them as I was more interested in bolt guns such as my Remington 700.

Years later he decided to purchase a new Colt M4 something-or-other anyway and we took it to the gun range.

"These things are fun, care to try it?"

Me: "Sure...hey wait a minute, these things are kind of fun."

He then proceeded to jump in my bottom:

"YOU IDIOT, I COULD HAVE BOUGHT ONE OF THESE THINGS FOR TEN TIMES LESS BEFORE THIS STUPID 1994 GUN BAN, I AIN'T NEVER LISTENING TO YOU AGAIN!"

ME: :o

Been into them ever since. :D

A friend bought a Bushmaster(pre Rem) Varminter. Never shot it. Offered it to me for 500 dollars with a 4 1/2 X 14 Nikon on it. It shoots almost as well as my 700 bolt gun. I bought a cheapy M-4 style for 400 bucks...nothing great in my opinion. Then bought a completed Anderson lower...for 150 bucks...put a good Timney trigger in it I got in a yard sale buy...box of stuff for 10 bux. Went to the local gun club swap/sale. Got an Anderson HB upper with sights a Magpul 30 round mag and 100 rounds of US military ammo for 275 dollars. Put it all together and the darn thing shoots well. Sold the M-4 style and got a nice Ruger Mini 14...I have 'nuff military style stuff now. Guess I oughta get more ammo for 'em......or make my own
