So many guns...am I nuts?

I've had days where my biggest decision is what gun I am going to carry. I have a safe filled with revolvers and autos of just about every kind made. For the ones I really like, there is usually another one either just like it or very similar. Chances are if its not in the safe, I've owned it at one point in time. Every now and then I think about getting it all pared down to either a single action type, a single brand or single caliber. I can't do it.

What's wrong with me? It seems extreme. I read and admire posts where someone has found his exemplar - knows exactly what he wants and focuses on that one gun. No distractions. No clutter. Purposeful.

Is this nuts? Am I compulsive? Maybe just lack discipline to pick a line and stick to it? Anyone else have the same thoughts?

We really don't have enough information. We also don't care. If you're crazy, what difference does it make if you're happy? You gave us abstract numbers, not real ones we could use to judge. If your total is 20 guns, and you made this post, I'd say you're insane. If you have 200, good on ya. If you've got 2,000 (or more), being nuts is the least of your problems.

Don't allow others warped idea of how many guns is too many. You can always trade or sell a few if you start feeling guilty about it. When I start feeling depressed, I just buy a gun or two, like this morning. It makes me feel a lot better. I only have to answer to my wife, and she doesn't care if I buy one or ten more.

Wrong place to ask this question. I have occasionally had thoughts like yours, but I have made more mistakes selling guns than buying them. Certainly if you're not into three digits in possession, it can't be too serious.

I talked to a guy who works at a large local gun shop ---he told me he used to buy up all the cool and/or collectible stuff --but has since reduced his stash.

Talked to a different guy, different store who has over 300 guns.....

As for me I fall into your camp ---if and when friends ask how many guns I have ---I always tell them "I don't have 5 dozen"....... or is it 6 dozen....

It's kinda like Martini's (the drink not the action). One is never enough and you'll just have to find out how many is too many. But then again there's tomorrow.

I think you are VERY sick and need to divest yourself of most of them. You should pare your collection down to two or three pieces and give the rest to charity. PM me for the address of a REALLY good charity. :) Depending on the number you wish to donate to me, ahhh, I meant to say charity, that could put the charity into the NEXT century number as the charity past the first and second century numbers several years past.

Sir, different jobs call for different tools. There's only so much you can do with just a flat screwdriver and a claw hammer.

JMHO, FWIW.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

never sell cause you only have to replace it later, an i dont call nuts just a nonal guy that likes guns , is that a bad thing i dont think so an dont forget to stock up on the ammo to for them too , if the ammo goes all u got is a tomato stake at best , hell them hillbillys was right lock an load seens the law never mess,s with them , back in the hills

I wouldn't say nuts, but, no offence intended, you are being unsafe to yourself if you pick a different gun to carry daily. It's best to carry the same gun (or guns) daily, and in the same position. If things go bad, the last thing you need on your mind is "What gun am I carrying, Where am I carrying it, and what do I have to do to get it out and ready to fire?" Your mind will be blank, your pulse will be racing and your hands shaking. If you carry the same all the time, it's less to think about. Practice your draw and presentation. Make it second nature. You will only have time to react, not think. That's where the training comes in.
Now as to the question of the number of guns you have, if you have the money, buy all the guns you want. You are a collector, a connoisseur. You appreciate the beauty in the gun maker's art. One gun is not enough, a thousand is not too many. When you reach seven figures, then you can begin to ask if you might have too many. If you have any you REALLY want to get rid of, I'd be happy to take anything off of your hands that you'd like to give me. I'll even leave it up to you to pick. My e-mail is in my profile. -Ed.

I think anyone who could afford it but still does does not own at least a few dozen guns is nuts. Owning a few dozen guns would indicate a person is normal, but a few hundred guns would be even better.

I pretty much agree with your first sentence, but not your second. Sometimes one's living space (like mine, for instance) doesn't really make it convenient to store more than a hundred or so firearms securely. Couple that with the possibility that one might not have use for more than a few dozen, and you might end up like me, with not even anywhere near a hundred. There's certainly nothing wrong with having a few hundred guns, but it's not always better than having fewer.

can't be considered nuts with only one safe full of guns. now with 8-10 safes full, you might have some issues.

Nuts?
Depends on how many Children and Grandchildren you have.

Me, I buy guns and ammo for my children and grandchildren who may not be able to buy it or afford it.

I was told a long time ago that as long as you're not forgotten, you are never truly dead. What better way to be remembered than for a Grandchild to tell his children that these guns I leave to you were bought, owned and carried by my Grandfather.

I have my Grandfathers Navy Colt that he carried as a Drummer in the 33rd Alabama Infantry in the War of Northern Aggression. I fire it on his birthday every year.
