So. What would you do with this 586

I have this 586. I got it at a pretty good price last fall. I like it a lot but I am not crazy about the 6" barrel. That is why I have the 4" barrel in the picture. I am thinking about having S&W change out the 6" for the 4". I am having some reservations. The biggest one is that the gun is in mint condition. The 4" barrel is in about 95% condition.

Should I sell this one and look for a 4", 586 or just say screw it and send it off to S&W?



To tell the truth, I would like to have it matte blued, the combat package done, barrel swapped out, have the ramp milled off and set up for interchangeable front blades and put a Bowen or Cylinder and Slide rear sight on it. Maybe even a wider trigger and hammer too if I could find one.



What would you guys do?

It is your gun. Make it to suit YOUR tastes....I have modified several guns for my needs/wants.

A 586 is not a super collectible model like a RM, so just do what you like

What are you going to DO with it after it has the 4" barrel on it?

I wouldn't modify a truly "mint" discontinued-and-desirable gun unless I was going to use the heck out of it after the modification.

If you can afford to pay for all these modifications, you can probably just afford to buy-outright a shooter-grade .357.

The more you un-original an original gun, the more the value of the original guns goes up.

I agree, with the mods you are seeking, you might as well buy a 4" or more suitable length and keep that one as is. These aren't exactly falling off the shelves, you know.

Let me know if I have this right,

1. You bought a great Model 586 (probably has the "M" stamp) last year for an excellent price, so you're already ahead of the game financially. I'd bet that S&W might charge $100-$175 to change out the barrels, plus it would be in Springfield for several weeks.

2. I'd sell the one with the 6" barrel to another forum member and buy a Model 586 which already had a 4" barrel (and the "M" modification) and keep all of the money that you saved to buy your next wheel gun.

Does this make sense?

I'm not reading good things from other forum members about crush fitted barrels and misaligned front sights.

I would just leave it alone, I think it's beautiful the way it is. I love my 686's and my 6" shoots better than either of my 4 inchers (one square butt and one round butt) and certainly better than my 2 1/2 inch.

My only 586 is a pellet gun (and it's 6 inches lol).

It sure is pretty the way it is. I would leave it be and find a 4". All the mods you are after are not cheap either.

If you're going with all the mods,I would do this one.If you want a stock 4 incher,I'd sell it and buy the shorter gun.

Thanks for the posts guys! I am leaning toward finding another one or another 686 in a shorter barrel length. I really don't want to do the same to my 686 as I have used it for bullseye target matches and it is a tack driver as is.

Even if you trade it in for a 4" you are still going to have to do a lot of custom work which is going to cost many $$. If you have all this work done, the barrel change out becomes just part of the cost.

What did I do?

Had a 4" barrel installed and had the whole thing reblued so it would match.

I don't regret it for a second and I LOVE my 586.
