So you own a J-Frame.....now what

Flork,

Thank you for the great kit and for taking the time to make the videos. My kit arrived on Tuesday and surgery is scheduled for this weekend.

Thanks for the kit, fast delivery, and helpful videos.

And you believe that these kits are good enough for duty guns... Correct? If so then I'm in!..

Range Report

Received my Apex Tactical J-frame Duty/Carry kit & installed it in my 442-1 this week. Had a chance to take it to the range today. Very smooth trigger and a lot lighter than stock, although still firm enough that I don't consider it dangerous. Put 150 rounds of 158gr +P FMJ and 15 rounds of Gold Dot SB 135gr +P through it without any issues at all. Not a single light strike. I'm very pleased with the kit. Let my wife try it and now she insists I order another to install in her 642. Thumbs up from this customer.

Thanks, got my order placed. And figured while I had it open I'd get that pesky lock taken care of so ordered a Plug as well.

Yessir!! We do consider it suitable for duty use. Our LE guy has been using his as his backup carry gun for weeks now and is more than satisfied.

Scott,

Are you guys considering a kit for the .22 J frames? I'd like to put one in the 43C if they ever become available.

Hey Scott, when I got my M36, the double action trigger pull was stiffer than a wedding pecker.
I put about a thousand rounds through it in six months and now it feels just about right (Either the springs loosened up or I did).
You said your kit makes the pull about 9 pounds. What difference, if any, did you measure after 1000 rounds ?

Thanks,

~ Alan

I just spit my coffee all over my computer .... "Stiffer then a wedding pecker!"... That's priceless! Epic! Lol

I know there has been an 'extended firing pin' available for quite some time. As it is essentially a regular fp with an elongated notch, allowing it to squish the little return spring more while removing the 'dry fire' capability, is your fp actually longer? Do you include a stiffer fp return spring? Can you dry-fire the non-rimfire J-frames with your 'kits' installed?

Also, a new J-frame may not even return it's trigger with the lowest (11#?) Wolff rebound spring installed, so I sure hope your '5.5#' rating isn't measured the same way. Of course, dry-fire break-in - or appropriate cleanup of the rebound slide, etc, will improve that.

My suggestion to new J-frame owners is to insure they have some lube - and break them in through dryfire or use - especially before changing springs. I'll await some longterm use reports on your kits - which I hope will be good, as I, too, like to see someone approach a 'problem' with an engineered cure.

Sonny - Yes, we're working on one for the rimfire guns. It's a bit challenging, but we're making progress on them.

Blujax01 - Wedding Pecker....AWESOME!! To answer your question, the test bed 340 has had more than 1500 rounds through it with the same spring set and the pull measures the same within 1oz after that many rounds.

Stainz - Other firing pins are more like "extended throw" ours is a truly extended firing pin. I'm not going to get into the dimensional differences, but the Apex pin has been designed from the ground up to improve reliability and last a life time. We have a few of our firing pins in competition guns that have lasted for more than 7 years now with thousands of rounds of live fire with tens of thousands of rounds of dry fire on them as well.

The firing pin return spring we include is a reduced rate spring compared to the factory spring. This is another product we've carefully developed over the past couple of years to enhance reliability and longevity.

The Apex J-Frame springs have been carefully balanced to function correctly over long periods of time. Balancing the rebound spring to the main spring is something that we've been doing here for years and have applied to the J-Frame kit as well.

Any plans to offer kits without the firing pin? No need paying for a firing pin that won't be used, as on older guns with hammer nose FP's, ya' know.

One other thing to mention about our firing pin as well:

The Apex firing pin was designed to stop forward movement on the Firing Pin Retaining pin just like the factory pin was. Wee believe this adds to the longevity of the firing pins as they don't stop on the forward edge of the body where they are more likely to break.

To also answer Stainz question about Dry Fire, yes you can dry fire our firing pin in the center fire guns with minimal risk of breakage.

Broker,

I've got a model 60 coming for proofing now. Once we shoot it enough to be satisfied that the spring kit works, we'll release the springs as a separate kit. A few people have said they're buying the kit for use in the older guns and just plan on not installing the firing pin, which you could certainly do.

Thanks Scott, I'd bet the firing pin costs you at least as much, probably more than the two springs, & kits without the FP should put you close in price to Wolff's. I have four J-frames, one 642, one 63 Kit gun, & two older mod 60's. The difference in price when buying several kits can be a factor in how many you buy. Best regards, & Thanks!
