Back at the beginning of December I was packing up my Competitive Edge Dynamics M2 chronograph when the readout unit got knocked off the bench onto the concrete floor. I have to admit this was not the first time it was dropped.

When, not long afterwards, I was chronogrpahing some more loads the device was not working correctly. There were no 0's displayed, only 8's instead, but I was getting consistent readings. The next time though, just before Christmas, the readings were rubbish. I would have two or three 200 gn .45 acp velocity readings in the mid to high 800's, then the next reading would be 1350 or higher.

Now shooting stuff is expensive here. This unit cost me over NZ $350 (US$550) new about three years ago. At the time it was "on sale" as a runout unit, the shop deciding to go for a more upmarket model which was another NZ$100 on top. I had a look on a local internet auction site and e-bay but could only find cheap Chinese chrono's for sale at anywhere from NZ$85 - $250.

The first Wednesday of the month is my club committee meeting, and this month (last Wed, the 2nd Jan) I asked if the old chronograph (the club bought a laser model a year or so back) was still round, still working, and available for sale.

Yes it is still round, it works fine but it is not for sale as it will be needed for our new Steel Challenge setup as it can also be connected to the timing system we will be using. It was suggested that I contact CED by e-mail and see if parts were available.

So last Thursday (a week ago today for me) I e-mailed CED and the next day got a reply back requesting some more details of the fault and a photo of the unit turned on. Turns out that my M2 (manufactured in 2013) cannot be repaired after being dropped but I was offered a new unit at 25% under current retail plus shipping.

It took a few days to get the shipping costs (US$36 by airmail) but the e-mail arrived this morning. I replied with my credit card details and the transaction was processed this afternoon.

I could have saved myself the shipping costs. CED will be at the SHOT show in Vegas later this month and my club president is attending (he manages the factory floor for a local ammunition manufacturer so is going with all management for work), but I decided the hassle of having him collect it wasn't worth the savings. Besides, it should arrive in about 10 days, about the time they will be leaving for Vegas.

It is not often that an overseas company will go out of the way to assist a customer half way around the world. I could have just been told to order a new unit through the local importer, or to pay full retail online. Instead I got great customer service and will probably buy from them again when I need to.

I'm glad that they stepped up to the plate and helped you out, Kiwi cop. And you know, that is just good advertising for CED, as you will tell your tale of how they gave you a great discount on replacing one of their old products too. Don't sneeze at word of mouth advertising; it works.
