Some gun humor

My father once told me a story about a guy who worked for him that owned a 458. As many auto workers of the time, he had come up from Tennessee to get a job. During summer shut downs, when the plant would close for model change over, he would travel back home to visit friends and family. During one of those visits, he took a brand new Model 70 in 458 caliber for his friends and family to admire. They took it out to shoot and here was his report:

Every one shot it once.
Every one said "It weren't that bad."
Not one of them wanted to shoot it again.

Friend of mine had a 460 Weatherby. I shot it twice. The second time was to convince myself that the recoil from the first time did not hurt me that bad.

He also had a 416 Rigby. I shot it once. That one hurt.

I shot two rounds with one in my younger years. Hit the 100 yd target in the 8 ring first shot, second shot missed the target completely.... flenched just a tad!!!!

I was shooting revolvers at the range a while back. There was a guy in the next booth shooting a Glock. He seemed interested in what I was doing, so I asked if he would like to try out one of mine. After a few rounds, he thought he might like revolvers, and asked if I would like to shoot his Glock. I said "I guess so - throw it out there!"

We had a laugh, I shot a few rounds of 9mm. Good day at the range.

My BIL had a sporting good shop and once when I was there I found what looked like a brand new 416 Ruger in the used gun rack. When I asked I was told a guy bought it, had a scope mounted, left the store with a box of ammo. He reappeared shortly there after to trade it in, complete with 19 unfired rounds. My BIL told me he would make me a real good deal on it, but, having no plans for an African safari, and finding the recoil of my 338WM enough to get my attention. I declined.

I recently bought a 12 gauge semiautomatic bullpup. By the time I got to my last shot, with slugs, I thought I was gonna have to go to the orthopedic surgeon. Yeah, wimp, but from now on it's shoot from the hip.

I've never shot one. Is the kick any worse than a 12ga slug? Or a 10ga buckshot load?
Well, I've shot 30-06, .308 and 12 ga slugs, and didn't mind a full range session with any of them.
Like Tom S. anecdote above, about 35 years ago, I fired one round of .458 Win through a Model 70 Safari, and never again, unless I'm facing a charging elephant. Here are some numbers for comparison:
cartridge........gun wt...recoil energy ft-lb...recoil velocity fps
12ga slug.........7.5.........28.8....................?
.308 150gr.........7..........15.8....................11.7
30-06 150gr.......8..........17.6....................11.9
.458 Win 500gr...9..........62.3....................21.1

Recoil energy is how hard your shoulder gets pushed, and recoil velocity is a measure of how fast it happens.
The .458 recoil sensation is double to 2 to4 times as hard and twice as fast as most of us are used to.
I suspect if you were so brave as to shoot a box of .458 Win through a Winchester 70 Safari, you'd have a headache, a bruised shoulder and maybe a detached retina.
A heavier rifle would ameliorate that a bit.

That's some very interesting information.
